Christoph Heubner, Exekutiv-Vizepräsident des Internationalen #Auschwitz Komitees, sagte laut Mitteilung: "Dies ist ein durchsichtiger und schäbiger Versuch, Heidenauer #Opfer der #Nazis erneut aus der Stadt hinauszuwerfen und sie dahin zu entsorgen, wohin das #Gedenken nach Meinung der AfD schon längst gehört: auf den Friedhof." Dass CDU-Abgeordnete der AfD "zu solchen Schäbigkeiten die Hand reichen", sei ein #Skandal.

"Arbeit macht frei" - work makes one free, was a cynical welcome at the Auschwitz I camp. SS guards often told prisoners of #Auschwitz that the only way out from the camp was through the chimney of the crematorium.

12 October 1892 | Edith Stein was born in Wrocław. She was a German Jewish philosopher who converted to Catholicism, became a theologian & a Carmelite nun. She was murdered in Auschwitz in August of 1942.

27 December 1924 | A Polish Jew Jakub (Jack) Fogel was born in Turek.

In Auschwitz from 27 August 1943
No. 140964
Transferred to Fürstengrube sub-camp.

In 1945 he was on a death march, ending up on one of the ships in the Lubeck Bay that were mistakenly bombed by the British RAF on 3 May 1945. More than 7,000 prisoners were killed. Jakub survived.

After the war he emigrated to Australia.
Today he turns 98.
Happy birthday.
