Anne: Both grey and harbour seals live along our local coastline. Sadly the seals often fall victim to things like ghost nets, six-pack drink pulls, boats and jet skis. This mural is inspired by local activism and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) who help save our ocean wildlife.

Mosaic Artist Gary Drostle

Gary Drostle: On leaving Art College in 1984 I was determined to create work outside of the gallery system. I wanted to make work out in public spaces. Works which harmonized with, and were part of, our built environment.

This vision was inspired by my long fascination with classical and ancient art and my own belief in art as an expression of all of our existence, open and accessible to all.

Over the course of more than thirty years dedicated to creating site specific artworks that original passion has only increased as I have become more aware of our relationship with our environment and my skills to create such work have broadened and developed.

Gary Drostle: The whole world of graffiti and street art I find extremely vibrant and inspiring and I am very honored to have had the opportunity to create with or alongside some great street artists including an amazing project with InkCrew in Bogota and international mosaic artists in Santiago, Chile. I have also taken part in the UpFest, Bristol and the Street Art Biennale in Cali, Colombia.

Gary Drostle: Koi lily pond mosaic – There’s something about making the surface of water in mosaic that completely captivates me but at the same time is endlessly frustrating as inevitably I fail to capture it. Each one pushes me on to the next.

Ancient Inspiration

Gary Drostle: My first and greatest inspiration has always been ancient art. From cave paintings to Greek Black Figure vases and on to the fabulous mosaic floors of the Roman world.

I studied Classics at school and find the British Museum in London is the place I return to again and again. My ‘logo’ of course was inspired by the many ghostly hands found on ancient cave sites around the world, perhaps the original signature.

Not a hand print but the impression left by a hand removed these ancient signatures for me symbolize the effect we leave behind on our environment and also represent a very open and democratic view of artistic participation.

There are two attributes of much of these works that particularly inspire me. One is the integration of these works with the human environment, they are knitted into the everyday life and culture in a way that our society seems to have almost forgotten. The second attribute is the balance of meaning, pattern and abstraction that is something I continuously aspire to.

Which one is your favorite?

In the city of Porto, Portugal, there’s a church that stands out from everything around it. It’s called the Chapel of Souls, and its walls are completely covered in 15,947 blue tiles, called azulejos.

These tiles make the building look like a piece of art. The work was done by Eduardo Leite in 1929, and it’s still as beautiful as ever.

The pictures on the tiles tell important stories from history and religion, like the death of Saint Francis of Assisi and the martyrdom of Saint Catherine. Even though they were made in the 20th century, the tiles were designed to look like they came from the 1800s, making them feel timeless.

But the Chapel of Souls isn’t just about tiles. It also has stunning stained glass windows that show scenes of “the souls.” These windows were painted by Amândio Silva in the 19th century, even before the tiles were added. Together, the windows and tiles make this church a must-see for anyone who loves art and history.

The chapel has two entrances, including one that leads to a tall, two-story bell tower. It’s a great example of the craftsmanship that Portugal is known for. Whether you’re a big fan of art or just someone who likes exploring cool places, the Chapel of Souls will leave a lasting impression.

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: This painting, 100 ft in the air, is so special to me. I lived in the building it is painted on when I was 17 years old. This series is so special to me. I’ve long wanted to create it, and join the long list of Black artists and writers who have used the mythology of Black folk flying in their work. I’ve interviewed so far several Black people about the idea of our ability to fly. Photographed them. Discussed freedom and healing with them.

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: “I let go of what has weighed me down. Light as a feather, I ride the wind. Like Black folks have always done. Flying free above the structures built to confine us.” It took me a while to get to this final writing of prose for the mural. I wanted to convey both my own personal weightlessness as a means to fly, inspired by Toni Morrison’s writing. As well as a reference to the collective ability found in historical stories. My work is generally about how we experience particular environments on the ground through the lens of race and gender. This project is breaking that open, offering public images of us traversing a new space – the air – above societal structures and boundaries.

Rexenera Fest: Alba Fabre tends to construct poetic narratives from an open and inconclusive point of view. His work, located on Avenida da Milagrosa, introduces us to the intimacy of an anonymous couple, in a moment of union in which different ideas are whispered in a veiled way, deconstructing certain roles of classical art and bringing them to our contemporaneity.

Male fragility, vulnerability, and sensitivity contrast with the strength and wholeness of the female figure, while their bodies merge to form a delicate, powerful image under a quick, precise brushstroke.

Breathing is the most natural acts, no need to be deliberate at all. Breathe in, breathe out. Slow down the beast inside you, learn to calm yourself in spite of all the disturbances outside.

Satr: I’m the kind of person who gets nervous relatively easily, and when I arrived in Europe last week, I couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous in a new environment. But my new friends LEDANIA and SONG said, “Don’t be nervous, Satr. exhale, inhale, just feel your breath.” After that, I really wasn’t so overwhelmed. That night I went back to the hotel and thought back to this experience that had happened during the day. The idea slowly took shape as I drew and listened to their music.

I named it “Breathing”:

Satr: My draft concept is; A lot of things have happened in the past year, and each thing will have different answers in different positions. I drew a mountain lion. The flame is its consciousness. It ignites in front of it and surrounds it in a circle. I hope that anyone who sees this work will find a peaceful mood. Face these things calmly.

About SATR: She works and lives in Guangzhou (China) and has been doing street art since 2013. Her original spray painting atomization shape method makes her animals very dynamic, taking fog as the shape.

This is different from the realistic shaping of western oil painting, and deeply studies the permeability of graffiti spray paint, so that her works still have the charm of ink in addition to peeling off traditional Chinese painting tools.

SATR’s works can see the profound exuberance of western graffiti and the soft “XieYi “(traditional Chinese painting style in vivid expression and bold outline) brushwork of oriental painting, which runs through her works all the time. The signature of the ancient seal cutting style is the oriental imprint that she conveys to the outside world.
