Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: This painting, 100 ft in the air, is so special to me. I lived in the building it is painted on when I was 17 years old. This series is so special to me. I’ve long wanted to create it, and join the long list of Black artists and writers who have used the mythology of Black folk flying in their work. I’ve interviewed so far several Black people about the idea of our ability to fly. Photographed them. Discussed freedom and healing with them.

Tatyana Fazlalizadeh: “I let go of what has weighed me down. Light as a feather, I ride the wind. Like Black folks have always done. Flying free above the structures built to confine us.” It took me a while to get to this final writing of prose for the mural. I wanted to convey both my own personal weightlessness as a means to fly, inspired by Toni Morrison’s writing. As well as a reference to the collective ability found in historical stories. My work is generally about how we experience particular environments on the ground through the lens of race and gender. This project is breaking that open, offering public images of us traversing a new space – the air – above societal structures and boundaries.

The swing is the best metaphor of life: the breeze of the present gives the push towards the future, while a shiver rises and dusts off the past.

“Floating World” by Ray Bartkus in Marijampolė, Lithuania.

This remarkable mural by Ray Bartkus was intentionally painted upside-down to create a magical effect. The swimmers, rowers, and swans appear right-side-up only when reflected in the waters of the Šešupė River, which flows through the heart of the city.

Visitors to the old dam are invited to rediscover the mural’s beauty time and time again. As Bartkus explains:

“The drawing itself is created in reverse, and its true form is revealed only in the water’s reflection. I hope that every time people pass by, they will discover something new, because this artwork, like our days in life, is never the same as it was yesterday.”

Located in the charming Śródka district of Poznań, Poland, an eye-catching mural by artist Radosław Barek has become a beloved attraction.

Found east of Ostrów Tumski on ul. Śródka 3, the mural transports viewers to Śródka in the 1920s, featuring a vibrant cast of characters that include a rotund butcher, a trumpeter, a cat, and Władysław Odonic, the Duke of all Greater Poland during that era.

What makes this mural particularly impressive is its clever use of three-dimensional illusions, making the artwork appear to rise up as a colorful mirage amidst the quaint village atmosphere of Śródka when approached from the east (tram stop Rondo Śródka).

The idea for the mural was conceived by Gerard Cofta, a long-time Śródka resident.

Artist Radosław Barek then utilized preserved photographs of the old Śródka as inspiration for the concept of painting several houses on the wall using spatial illusions. The mural, titled “The Story of Śródka with a Trumpeter on the Roof and a Cat in the Background,” brings to life the red roofs, colorful facades, and lively atmosphere of the past.

Śródka has always been a unique and historically rich district, with its origins dating back to the 13th century. After a period of decline in the 1960s due to urban development, the area underwent a major revitalization in 2007, transforming it into a hip and bustling neighborhood that attracts crowds every weekend.

The mural, which was painted by a team of four to eight people over a month, has drawn attention not only from Poland but also from around the world. Its images have been featured on prominent websites dedicated to architecture and beyond. This stunning piece of street art has breathed new life into the Śródka district and may inspire similar projects for other buildings in the area.

In the heart of Lyon, France, adorning the façade of a building, stands the magnificent Wall of the Silk Weavers (La Fresque des Canuts)

La Croix-Rousse once served as the bustling center of Lyon’s silk industry during the 19th century, earning it the nickname “the hill that works.” The mural, known as “Le Mur des Canuts,” pays homage to the silk weavers who resided and toiled in this vibrant community.

The mural captures the essence of the neighborhood’s past, featuring colorful buildings, pastel-hued high windows, a stone stairway, a charming Guignol theater, and, of course, a silk shop. La Croix-Rousse’s silk industry may have diminished over time, but the mural stands as a testament to the resilience and determination of the silk workers who once rebelled against their oppressive working conditions in 1831. Throughout the years, the mural has undergone two updates, in 1997 and 2013, reflecting the evolving landscape and spirit of the neighborhood. Today, it remains one of Europe’s largest displays of public art, drawing visitors from far and wide to admire its grandeur and immerse themselves in Lyon’s rich cultural heritage.

Muraleslian: For centuries, the women of Ondarroa managed the most important activities of village life. This mural is a tribute to many of those women.

The weaver, methodical and austere is an archetype that refuses to submit, she is living memory. When she weaves, she weaves something more than what we see with the naked eye.

The net’s creation is individual and collective identity… and we already know that collective identity is impossible without memory, it must be maintained by memory. To remember is to make visible, to claim, to repair. And as a weaver in Ondarroa said not long ago: “you have to fix things, you have to dignify them”.

The nets she and many others weave are networks that hold and maintain the community together. In between the threads arise woven tales through which lived stories are narrated.

Sometimes the practice of a trade leads to introspection, silence and remembrance, and other times it leads to words, solidarity and the search for solutions to common problems. When the activity is publicly exposed (when it is practised outdoors), the ability to transmit, the desire to share experience and the importance of the processes are made public.

This mural is also, in part, a legacy in the practice of sharing. Its anchored in this town, in this neighbourhood – as a contribution to the exercise of memory: meticulous hands of women, hands of woman past and present, THE HANDS OF MANY IN THIS TOWN, creating reality and at the same time eroding old archetypes based on oblivion and invisibilization.

It is an invitation to continue threading the true legacy of all those who have not ceased to weave/create/concoct, that is: let us continue to weave together!…

“ATLAS”

NemO’s: In the district Santo Stefano of Bologna, the 8000mq of the ex military barracks Masini is the place of the social center LABAS. This place has a significant history, during the war the partisan’re was imprisoned, tortured and killed. Today here develops a reality that produce and guarantees social cohesion. LABAS makes projects for a food sovereignty with Orteo, a district’s social garden, and other projects for self production. They make projects for human rights and help students, unemployed and retirees with housing rights. LABAS also organize event and initiatives for family and children. In this way the yard of the barracks becomes a open square for all citizens. The inhabitants of the district really appreciate this reality but now LABAS is in danger of eviction. ATLAS, the mythological figure that holds the world on his shoulders, is my solidarity contribution to this reality. I’ve draw a man that holds his big head in his shoulders. The head, mind and history, when big are more difficult to hold up. If something is complex and have a relevant history we have a burdensome load of responsibility.

Chemis: This painting is inspired by the history of the house in Jateční Street in Pilsen, which was used for housing low-income families and was notoriously known as the Romani ghetto. These socially excluded areas are like a vicious circle, which seems to be a difficult challenge for politicians and local residents.

Often, these buildings are the only possible place that provides people with a home, a refuge and safety for themselves and their children. But it’s even harder to get rid of the stigma when you live in such a place. Made at Wallz Festival.

Muralist Alegria del Prado

White Siberian Tiger Mural by Alegria del Prado with the help of Octavio Alegria in Balashikha, Russia for International Mural Festival.

Alegria del Prado: My work is based on the use of animals and plants as symbols. This time, I researched the fauna that can be found in Russia and chose the Siberian tiger, which, to my taste, may somehow represent the Russian people because of its strength and beauty. It doesn’t really have a literal explanation of the elements that might appear in the image, I think the animals themselves are already expressing emotions and ideas to those who contemplate them.

International Mural Festival: This is a collaboration of two artists – Octavio Alegria from Mexico and Esther del Prado from Spain. They have been working together since 2010. In their work, they mainly create dream worlds, calling for harmony between nature and the modern world. Interestingly, to create this mural, Octavio did not use any projector or markup. How did he do it, let’s keep it a secret.

Ali Zakir: “It was on Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan. We decided to make something pleasant for the residents of the city. Previously, children were always drawn, as they are our future. Here they wanted to show the sun and a boy in a blue T-shirt – the colors of our flag, which mean a bright future.”

“Originally, we were into graffiti, and we were always interested in doing something big. Somewhere in 2010, we started painting murals for our own money. Then they started calling us to different cities. To date, we have already created about 30 paintings: in Almaty, Nur-Sultan, Kostanay, Karaganda, Taldykorgan, Atyrau and Aktau.”

Drawing murals is not an easy thing, once again I am convinced of this. But even at the beginning of our journey, we decided for ourselves that we should, regardless of the situation and difficulties, show our maximum on the wall.

After all, the viewer sees only the result, it does not matter to him in what conditions it was all done. Just as they don’t wave their fists after a fight, so after drawing you can’t write that the weather was bad, circumstances interfered, etc.

Case Maclaim: I believe the actual beauty of fairy tales is that it is up to our imagination how the character looks and moves and that version is not really up to debate, as it is just like a fingerprint, very unique and personal. With this mural in the old, historical city center of Madrid I wanted to try a different approach. So I gave the viewer a new character of a yet unknown fairy tale. I have high hopes that it will encourage specially the young audience to come up with their very own story, in which the lead is a confident, black child in a golden wheelchair and in a self-made mermaid costume.

Bifido (direct translation): This wall belongs to an old abandoned tobacco factory. For years, people of all sexes and ages have worked inside it, many hours a day. As is the case in thousands of other places. A life at work, a life without life. Life in your free time, spent being entertained in some refreshing recreational activity. I often think of the concept of free time. I hate free time. It is the charity of a society that wants us to be slaves. You are pregnant with a sweat that exhausts, without giving joy. Making a work at work for me meant expressing all my dissent against this absurd idea that work (as a mere sustenance) gives meaning to our life. Making art is my job and I love it.

Bitter is a lost taste, even though bitterness is delicious and cures

Mona Caron: Gentiana Lutea – studding the landscape here in the highs of the Jura mountains, standing tall in the rolling meadows like little flagpoles marking the spots where you can dig for its magic and prized bitter root, a key ingredient of many vermouths, liqueurs, firewaters, syrups and tinctures, here in the homeland of Absinthe.

Bitter is a lost taste, even though bitterness is delicious and cures. Addiction to the sweet has narrowed the spectrum of pleasures that palates can enjoy, keeping many from healthy habits.

So I offer this bitter-rooted wildflower, a field weed as metaphor of resilience through the strength we gain by daring something feared, perhaps uncomfortably new but actually ancient, unearthing both medicine and pleasure which nature has been beckoning us towards all along. Follow the golden-flowered beacon.

In Warsaw, there’s a mural that pays tribute to Kora, a legendary Polish musician and cultural icon.
