Which of you has -or used to have- an 8-bit or 16-bit computer?

Let's see if Fedi is smarter than LLMs:

When we got our first PC a friend installed a bunch of games (Win95).

One of these was a 3D adventure game (maybe 3rd person view?). It was a miracle it ran on that HW and was very low poly. I didn't know English at the time so I have no clue what the game was about.

I remember that could walk around in a village and NPCs occasionally talked to you. Then giant green worms appeared and that's when I usually died 😁 or the game just went on because the worms weren't very targeted/hostile?

I'd appreciate any guesses on this! I'm not a huge gamer but want to know what that game was about.

90 Pixel Art Masterpieces: Pappas Pärlor’s Perler Bead Street Takeover

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills, because no one else seems to admit that the original arcade version of Commando had more than 8 directional shooting.

Like, look at this longplay:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=glAOASJEmQE

To me, it seems obvious that a lot of bullets are NOT just going in the standard 8 directions. It's possible to hit enemies that are "in between" vertical/horizontal and the standard diagonal slope.

Am I the only one who realizes this?.

doing some visual design research on isometric tile-based games and came across this incredible screenshot from Celtic Tales: Balor of the Evil Eye

that entire screenshot was drawn with just *sixteen colours*

A screenshot from a game. A modal dialogue shows an elderly bearded advisor saying "All voices are raised with thanks and high praise to the Goddess."

Above it: illustration of a man waving his hand over a bull as its handler stands by.

Below them is an isometric tile map showing a little island with trees surrounded by a sea.

OMG. You can buy the original Fallout game for £2 at Gog.

TWO POUNDS.

I think the nostalgia hit I got at the POSSIBILITY of playing it again was probably worth that.

In Duck Hunt the NES Zapper worked by blacking out screen & drawing white blocks around targets when you fire, for a couple frames. The diode in the Zapper detects the change in light intensity and tells the computer if it’s pointed at a lit target. #gamedev #retrogaming

It's been a while since I got anything retro (mostly for financial reasons - had to put away the spare earth-dollars to buy a new laptop later this week) but... I broke my rule and got some shiny things.

First up came this morning: yet another Game Boy - this time the GBC! I've never even SEEN one in person. And I must say, it's MAJESTIC. My first GBC game arrives tomorrow.
