A top down view photo on my desk, took this evening. On the left of the photo, Miolek, my third cat watching me taking the photo, then on the center I have my scenario on the desk near my tablet (a multipage printed document with two column, one for panel description, one for dialogue). The display show the interface of Krita and thumbnails of the panels in black and white and in very geometric early step. The mood is the one of the evening with low warm lights, and a empty coffee cup is on my desk.

A digital painting illustration being a parody of an iconic scene of the movie "My Neighbor Totoro"; but instead of Totoro it's a big Mastodon, and the two girls are replaced by Pepper and Carrot, the OC of my webcomic. The scene is a large view angle under rain at night on a bus stop, the sign has '20K' written on it and a sticker of a red heart symbol on the corner. Pepper has Carrot sleeping on her back, she is under an umbrella, waiting for the bus. She looks on her side, amused, and discover a large cartoony mastodon also waiting for the bus, and covered only with a large leaf on his head. He looks at her as if he was suprised she noticed him and even blushes a bit.

English : It's a rather dark vision of the world, almost apocalyptic. A skyscraper, well vertical at first, is now leaning, looking like the Pisa tower. Some purple smoke is tearing the green sky, and the building is abandoned, in ruins. On the foreground, there is a pair of glasses, they are broken. There are also two purple dice. Français : C'est une vision un peu apocalyptique : un gratte-ciel, bien vertical à l'origine, est penché dans le sol un peu comme la tour de Pise. Des volutes de fumée violette embrasent le ciel vert. Le bâtiment est abandonné, et sur le sol au premier plan sont placées des lunettes dont les verres sont fendus, ainsi que deux dés violets.

Step 1 of the painting: it's really painterly, not contrasted and just direct blobs of painting at this step. Description of the illustration (not repeated on later image description as they are all similar): A digital painting of a visual development for Pepper&Carrot: a view of a city with high buildings and a tramway system on high bridges. The city is lighten with lanterns. Pepper stands in the foreground under the rain with an umbrella. A research of an 'antique Asian steampunk' in the designs. Step 3: I tried to fix the 'block' I had on my disk, for that, I decided I need something darker around Pepper to cut the silhouette. The umbrella was a good way to add a big circular dark element and also to get high saturation of the light going threw it. I also spent a little time figuring what to do with the part on the right. You can see here a medieval door... (and still Carrot).
Step 2: The 'blocking' step. I'm still using a large brush and I'm not zooming in at this step. I try to modelize with painting all the main shape and take care of the perspective, the anatomy and the light. You can note Carrot (her cat) was supposed to be part of this illustration. The illustration was like that for a big 10 days on my disk, I disliked it. Step 4; the final. I removed Carrot: too many point of interest was competing each other in the illustration. The rain was a good way to hide the lack of details here and there. The building was repainted on the right with a design that could fit the scene. I also added building, lights and suggested silhouette of poeple in distance.

I continue my drawing training and sometimes I push the rendering of a test and finalize it, like in this one.
I'm using almost no ref' to train my ability to predict color and light by imagination. Among my new skill, I'm now more confident at drawing and designing men. I can also better predict overexposed light areas and strong sunlight. It feels great to do progress.
