NATURE VOL. 328 9 JULY 1987 COMMENTARY Unpleasant surprises in the greenhouse? Wallace S. Broecker There is now clear evidence that changes in the Earth’s climate may be sudden rather than gradual. It is time to put research into the build-up of carbon
dioxide in the atmosphere on a better footing. bdonnelly

Climate mini-rant coming...

When the seas are boiling and the sky is on fire, don't come crawling to science looking for help.

#Science has tried to help us for decades. Science saw this coming, crafted solutions, and shouted them from the rooftops. Those in power did not listen.

So, go pick a god and pray to it.

Appeal to the Kardashians.

Maybe Lebron James or Elon Musk will help.

Perhaps a podcast will intervene and save us,

Text reads : At least billionaires are getting richer.

In the U.S., recent annual estimates of bird deaths due to:

Cats = 2.4 billion bird deaths

Collisions from building glass = 600 million bird deaths

Land wind turbines = <200,000 bird deaths

Some politicians claim wind turbines “kill all the birds.”

But… they’re not really worried about birds. Rather, they prefer we stick with oil & gas over renewable #energy.

Things we talked about in 1999 as being detectable by 2100, are easily found now in 2023 and have been for years!

#ClimateChange mitigation.

Wrong idea - The tech heads talk of constructing Carbon Capture machines. That would require hundreds of thousands of machines, more mining, more power consumption #fail

Right approach #nature

But, the photo of another deforested landscape. This is not wetland, Tree's used to & would grow here. Sheep keep it looking like this.

Photo taken in #Sheep District National Park, #England (officially called the Lake District National park)

The photo shows a stream running through a deforested landscape. The only place where the odd tree grows is where humans or sheep couldn't get to them (e.g., on the vertical rocky crags).

As Tree's grow they capture carbon. To mitigate climate change we need to use solutions, big & small, that don't emit & or sequester atmospheric carbon dioxide

It takes a village…

…of billionaires to wreck a planet.

They don’t need to have a majority, or anything even close to a plurality. All it takes is a few thousand sociopathic billionaires — the population of a village — to take full control of everything and then completely ruin our livable biosphere while further enriching themselves.

The scale on the image below is NOT exaggerated. In less than two centuries, and especially just within the last 30 years, capitalist oligarchs have burned so much coal, oil, and gas that our climate system simply can’t handle it.

It’s almost out of control now. But the people who are to blame have names and addresses.

Also indicated are the safe climate temperature zone, the rise of human civilization, the start of the industrial revolution, and the extreme temperature danger zones that we will reach before 2050 and before 2100 if current policies are not changed.

Wealthy #tourists really are the worst: “Traveling to #Antarctica is a #carbonintensive activity. Flights and cruises must cross thousands of miles in extreme conditions, contributing to the #climatechange that is causing ice loss and threatening whales, seals, and penguins.”

“If a few decades ago, some people might have thought climate change was a relatively slow-moving phenomenon, we are now witnessing our climate changing at a terrifying rate,” says Professor Peter Stott, who leads the UK Met Office’s climate monitoring team. “As the El Niño builds through the rest of this year, adding an extra oomph to the damaging effects of human-induced global heating, many millions of people across the planet and many diverse ecosystems are going to face extraordinary challenges and unfortunately suffer great damage.”

Chart showing "Monthly averages of atmospheric CO2 as recorded at Mauna Loa in Hawaii."

Amounts of CO2 rapidly climb from ~325 ppm in 1960 to ~418 ppm in 2020.

Graphic also notes when various meetings were held and agreements were made to limit or reduce carbon emissions. None of this has had any effect.

This is a good primer, if you or someone you know needs a basic understanding of how climate change works and how damaging its effects can be...

Relevant to my previous post, here is another article about the tragic ongoing loss of biodiversity.

TITLE -- "Biodiversity: State of Emergency"

Key points:

◘ By 2050, 38-46% of animal and plant species could be wiped out from the planet.

◘ Of particular concern are Central and South America, sub-Saharan Africa, and Asia, which are more vulnerable to soil impoverishment.

◘ Within 30 years, the number of people living in arid regions could rise from 2.7 to 4 billion, increasing the risk of migration crises.

◘ Land degradation and climate change, leading to declining crop yields and social and economic instability, are likely to force 50-700 million people to migrate by the middle of the century.

It's wild to me that there's currently so much panic & fear about what #AI *might* do to "destroy" humanity, yet - at the same time - so little attention to the way that human behaviors are already, knowingly, putting billions of people & global biodiversity at tremendous risk. 🌍 #climatechange

This article is sickening to read. It perfectly encapsulates the disgusting horror of consumer capitalism at its very worst while presenting the stark difference in reality between the Global North and South.

Greta Thunberg (@gretathunberg), from page 19 of The Climate Book:

"Most people today are living well within the planetary boundaries. It is only a minority of us who have caused this crisis and who keep driving it forward. The widely popular argument that ‘there are too many people’ is a very misleading one. Population does matter, but it is not people who are causing emissions and depleting the Earth, it is what *some* people do. It is some people’s habits and behavior, in combination with our economic structures, that are causing the catastrophe."

"Lód morski na Antarktydzie sprawia, że nasza planeta działa - chłodząca osłona przeciwsłoneczna, izolujący koc, unikalne siedlisko, ściana ochronna, globalna pompa oceaniczna.
Roczny cykl zamarzania, a następnie topnienia Oceanu Południowego jest jak bicie serca.

If you're even vaguely familiar with #RightToRepair , care about #ClimateChange #Sustainability and #PlannedObsolescence this is amazing news!

Credit where it's due ... thanks to #LouisRossman and many more for 10 years of work to finally have a major victory over #JohnDeere which was lobbying hard to stop farmers from having the right to fix their own property.

I gave a lightning talk at #Confoo about things developers can do to fight #ClimateChange. It went off great! Now I want to expand it to a full 45-minute talk.

Are you a #WebDeveloper who cares about #ClimateChange? I need your help!

My team at Open Earth Foundation makes Open Source software to fight climate change.

We want to make our #DeveloperExperience better, so it's easier for people to contribute code to our projects.

We need volunteers willing to do a 1-hour Zoom call with us.

You'll be given a small task to do, and you'll share screen with us and think out loud as you try to do it.

If you think you could do this, please DM me!

bribes and direct action. But direct action is best when spiced up with cash too, if we want it to be sustainable.

Sadly, direct action is often sponsored by agents who aren't participating in fixing #ClimateChange at all.

I am hiring a lead full-stack Web engineer to help build #OpenSource software to fight #ClimateChange.

If you've shipped 1-2 Web projects and been the tech lead for 1 software project: we need your help.

Please boost for reach! #fedihire

#Capitalism will never solve #ClimateChange. Doing so would be putting something other than profit ahead of the primary drive, which is an antithesis to capitalism.

If heat wasn't enough of a scary factor in #ClimateChange, its deadly combination with air humidity should give anyone pause.

Last week I was in a thread where someone wondered about heat, human survivability/habitability, and climate change. I've done some technical work on this specific question, so, quick thread on basics, and what to worry about.

Key term to know: The "wet bulb" temperature.

I got reminded about “Das Erbe” today. Story is that the player inherits a building and has to fix it while taking environmental responsibility doing so.

This game is ~20 years old and, like Global Effect, features #ClimateChange warning about our limited resources with a focus on ozone already.

Like many old games it can be played in a browser nowadays:

Can you imagine if the World was just as alarmed about #ClimateChange as it is about the current #Coronavirus?

Even then it is to late to stop it of course. People had to be alarmed in the nineties, when all facts were already there.

You can also turn it around. Imagine when the World is not alarmed at all about the Coronavirus? They just regard it as an scientific 'opinion', and only after 2040 they will start thinking about doing something about it. Just imagine!
