@Rep. Ritchie Torres Welcome to the #Fediverse from Brooklyn! 👋 Gentle reminder that your Mastodon account can be followed from a number of different platforms, like #Friendica which I represent here. 😊

Yes, but that is still not good. Within ActivityPub, one cannot write a *message* that, a priori, is known to be correctly readable by any of the intended recipients -- unless it is a short (< 500 bytes) text in plain ascii, with no italics, boldface, or other markup, and no embedded images... >>

#Fediverse #ActivityPub #FediverseFragmentation

But that is BAD, VERY BAD! So the Fediverse is split into a myriad platforms -- and hence communities -- with incompatible features.

That may be great for the computer nerds who will join a dozen platforms just to revel in the features. It is terrible for those who only want a platform to communicate with other people...

There is a lot of talk on the #fediverse #mastodon about how #media sites should own their web/social presence and their audiences, by self-hosting.

Case in point,
@TexasObserver

But why stop there?

We should also be promoting the use of #peertube as a home for organizations to OWN their video presence as well.

Here's a great example of a media organization doing just that:

If you speak any French, you can follow them here: @blast_info

@Gabe Kangas If you want to have everything that is on #mobilizon + two-way interaction with the entire #fediverse then rather choose a #friendica account

Am I missing something or is there no way in #Mobilizon to follow a remote account and get Federated events? I hope I'm wrong? Is anybody more familiar with it than I am?

For reference I was really hoping to build the scheduled streams functionality of #Owncast to be compatible with Mobilizon and show up in people's events.

Hopefully I can have this conversation with the #Framasoft folks on April 10th at the first #Fediverse developers call! https://events.nixnet.services/events/92296854-651d-417f-a732-ea51ea94ac12

Fully nomadic Mastodon fork!

Someone seems to have succeeded in forking #Mastodon and migrating the fork to #Nomad, the underlying protocol of #Streams which provides #NomadicIdentity. There's little information about what exactly is going on, only a tech demo video exists on PeerTube. It shows two test instances and the exact same account with the exact same identity running on both, remaining fully in sync. So yes, it's nomadic.

The choice of Nomad instead of #Zot is understandable as it has better integrated #ActivityPub support, so there might not be much incompatibility between vanilla Mastodon and the fork, and it'll stay compatible with the rest of the #Fediverse. Compatibility with #Hubzilla and especially (streams) will even be enhanced, not only because the fork finally recognises nomadic channels, but also also because it clearly features text formatting and quotes. It remains to be seen whether the handling of embedded images will be improved, too.

This is still very experimental, and more information has been announced to follow soon.

I've been running user-testing on the process of signing-up onto the #Fediverse (including #Mastodon , #Pixelfed , and others).

My tests suggest a lot (probably most) people find it very difficult & confusing.

I think most people who try to sign-up — fail and give up.

Which means that if about 2,000 people are joining the Fediverse every hour, then — A LOT more than that tried to join, failed, and gave up.

The good news is — the sign-up user-experience ( #UX ) process can be improved.

OSM Town is a Mastodon server for OpenStreetMap fans:

If you want people's advice about any topic, type your question and tag it with #AskFedi, which is kind of like a bat signal for advice on the Fediverse 🦇

If you want a post to be shared, try adding "Boosts appreciated!". Some servers may even have an emoji for this such as :boost_ok:

By the way, remember that if you want your post shared publicly you have to give it a Public or Unlisted visibility setting. (More info about post visibility settings here: https://fedi.tips/who-can-see-my-posts-in-mastodon-how-do-i-send-dms-in-mastodon/)

#Fediverse

Is there any people here on the #Fediverse that have deep knowledge of DC #excitation systems for #synchronous machines, so #powerelectronics, for machines that have field current up to a few thousand ampere?
This is about #eletronic, but the kind with higher voltage and "real" current like in #thermalpowerplants, but preferable in #hydropower plants, mainly for #generator in such setups, but it can also be synchronous #motors, both up to 1.5 GW (most likely a generator then 😀.

So #electrical engineers or masters of that profession that work with high current applications.

The rise of the Fediverse is only accelerating as companies like Mozilla and WordPress make moves to support it. Even Meta is rumored to be working on a decentralized social network.

But there's one particular start-up that seems determined to go its own way.

I spoke with @tchambers and @evan about what's driving the Fediverse migration - and the obstacles that can thwart some would-be users.

It is how Mastodon instances talk to other Mastodon instances. And it is how, for example, Pleroma instances talk to Mastodon instances. Or to each other.

Re-inventing the federated wheel because you don't know that wheels exist

Thank you! I'm already hunting down your Patreon. This is far and away the best experience I've had in the #fediverse. Well done!

My “here's to the crazy ones" thesis:

• any #Fediverse self-hosted instance as easy to set up as a Facebook account

• #Fediverse must easily straddle;

- PRIVATE
consumer individual family safe spaces
#privacy #encryption

– OPENWEB
shared public resource, common carrier status,
actual virtual-public-square not #Elmo absolutist illusion w/corp asses covered by #Section230

• SysAdmin a pain = opportunity

• market for #Privacy enabled

• new Laws needed, incumbents will resist

@Casey Newton writes that Facebook/Meta is now trying to get on the "decentralized network" bandwagon greenwashing too. It is always fascinating to me how very not decentralized all of these things end up looking: from the web3 nonsense, to BlueSky, to now whatever the hell they plan on calling this. "Well you see akshully the technology allows for decentralization therefore it is decentralized even though we control 99.9% of it!" You know what else is a decentralized technology? The world wide web and HTTP. Hopefully the fediverse fix some of our shortcoming before the world buys the techbro bullshit so they can get another successful market monopoly operation. #facebook #meta #SurveillanceCapitalism #decentralization #fediverse https://www.platformer.news/p/meta-is-building-a-decentralized

@atomicpoet
Let me go further further:
Every #FAMILY should have their own #Fediverse instance.

So, I wonder, when did you join the #Fediverse?

Up to you how you count it in case of old accounts, migrated accounts, or accounts that were there but dormant for a long while.

For example: I had joined in April 2017, and moved instances twice. I count this as "earlier" in the poll below.

:boost_ok:

  • after September 2022 (42%, 489 votes)
  • after March 2022 (9%, 105 votes)
  • after January 2020 (9%, 107 votes)
  • earlier (39%, 454 votes)
1155 voters. Poll end: 2 years ago

Hey #Fediverse, I know y'all are sharing the utterly horrendous & #transphobic things as to draw attention to them, but also, please do think of the harm that the constant barrage of posts must be doing to the trans people you know.

Posts about US #transphobia are really starting to be overwhelming, and it'd be very helpful & kind to have them behind a content warning, or at least a hashtag that can be blocked or muted.

Picture placement compatibility test

It's one thing for a #Mastodon user to ask another Mastodon users to use CW because neither have user-defined filters that could do the same, but it's a little irritating to me when a Mastodon user makes a similar request to a #Friendica user because we do have extensive user-defined filters.

I know, I know. #Fediverse #Rant

Towards federated git collaboration

cross-postowane z: https://szmer.info/post/289222
Git was designed as a decentralized version control system from the ground up. Yet it has been subverted by centralizing hosting and collaboration platforms that compete on projects hosting their code on them. Disagreements on where a project should be hosted regularly result in flame wars. But why, since we live in a world of federated services? If the Git hosters would federate, it might not matter on which server a merge request or an issue is filed.

The #gitea issue targeted at adding #activitypub is still open, but it seems to require in-depth architectural changes. So what would be the best bet for a Git hosting platform to be the first in entering the #fediverse?
