News: TechCrunch | Government censorship comes to Bluesky, but not its third-party apps … yet

https://techcrunch.com/2025/04/23/government-censorship-comes-to-bluesky-but-not-its-third-party-apps-yet/

"Simply put, if you’re on the official Bluesky app and #Bluesky (the company) agrees to censor something in your region, there’s no way to opt out of this to see the hidden posts or accounts."

The article goes on to tell users how to get around the censorship by using a third party app, but the fact remains that the censored accounts will not be visible to most users.

Confirmation: #Bluesky Now Blocking User In Turkey In Response To Turkish Demands
\
Yesterday Arda Kılıçdağı @arda posted https://micro.arda.pw/@arda/114344261036182422 that #Bluesky had blocked a user in response to Turkish pressure, and published the purported notification.

Hi there,
We are writing to inform you that we have received a formal
request from a legal authority in Turkey regarding the
removal of your account associated with the following
handle [redacted] on Bluesky
The legal authority has claimed that this content violates
local laws in Turkey. As a result, we are required to review
the request in accordance with local regulations and
Bluesky’s policies.

Following a thorough review, we have determined that the
content in question violates local laws in Turkey, as
outlined in the legal request. In compliance with these legal
provisions, we have restricted access to your account for
users. ALT

Apparently, as @f and @ssg mentioned, Bluesky has started honoring account restriction / takedown requests from Turkish government.

Bluesky has been a haven for Turkish leftist people, because both the government and X has restricted access to the leftist accounts.

After people accepted Bluesky as a safe place, their "limiting access of accounts to specific regions" is frustrating, and exhausting.

I've been promoting ActivityPub / Mastodon for years, and I'll keep on doing so.

#bluesky

Bluesky team's official response to resion-restricting specicifc accounts due to demands of Turkish government.

People ask: "Why the preoccupation with #Bluesky? Lots of good folks are going there and love it."

@Daojoan does a great job of providing the long answer in this brilliant piece: https://www.joanwestenberg.com/big-tech-wants-you-trapped-the-open-web-sets-you-free-2/

But the short answer is that, by funneling users onto another unsafe centralized corporate platform, #Bluesky inhibits the construction of truly defensible public social media.

So now, when something happens over on Bluesky, the Fedi will not be ready to absorb a rapid mass migration.

!Friendica Support is there a reason i can't set notifications for new post of friends on #Bluesky (via the plug-in)

like I can for friends that are using #ActivityPub?

WHAT?! 😮

#Threads just took a page out of #Bluesky’s book and implemented a custom feeds feature.

So basically, Threads now has Bluesky’s major selling point—which is choose-your-own-algorithm.

Man, I wish Threads would open source this feature so other #ActivityPub-enabled software could take advantage of this. But maybe someone else coughMastodoncough could make this happen.

More improvements to Threads feeds to help you connect with others over your interests: you can now share your custom feeds for other people to add to their home screen. Feeds you share will be public and shown in a new "feeds" tab on your profile. This was a top request when custom feeds launched, so we've made sure creating and sharing feeds takes just a few steps and is easy for anyone.

Are there any #OpenSource services that would allow me to cross-post on the #Fediverse and on #Bluesky without creating a dummy account (as #Bridgy does)?

Ideally, I’m thinking about a client that supports both the #MastodonAPI and the #BlueskyAPI.

#Mastodon #API

Anyone used #Friendica? My wife @redbunhead.bsky.social discovered it when I told her about #Pixelfed.

I left #Facebook ~8yr ago & then #twitter for #mastodon. She’s on #FB & #Instagram & is exploring #BlueSky. We both just joined #Substack.

We’re looking for good decentralized social networks that aren’t owned by billionaires. I miss the FB feel sometimes, so any info on Friendica is appreciated.

Wife would also appreciate tips on choosing a Pixelfed server.

Let's try it again: This post from #Mastodon can reach the whole #Fediverse, #Bluesky & more. That's #Sharkey, #Pixefeld (hence the pic), #Mbin, #Lemmy, #Friendica, #Hometown, #Akkoma... How far can it go?

Please share it, wherever you see it! #SocialMedia

All the new users fleeing from one corporate-owned #socialMedia platform (#twitter) to another corporate-owned platform (#bluesky) are SOOO CLOSE TO GETTING IT... 😩

Ruszyła kolejna fala migracji z X/Twittera, więc dziś w #OkoPress przyglądam się alternatywom:
https://oko.press/ucieczka-z-twittera-przyszlosc-mediow-spolecznosciowych

Can I follow friends on #BlueSky from #Friendica (and specifically from Libranet)? I haven't managed so far. I tried searching for their profile URL with /rss at the end, but nothing is found. I've seen some conversations about this, but couldn't find a way to make it work.

Thanks!

@helpers Has anyone ever successfully added a rss feed from a bluesky account to their friendica account? What does it look like? I tried to do with a friendica account, but it broke all the timelines. I can't read any posts from anyone I follow now on friendica. #Friendica#Bluesky#NewHere#Friendica#Bluesky#NewHere

Just login and see for yourself how bad the content is. This is Instagram only with more words.

This is yet another social network for content and not for discussion.

Mark Zuckerberg ist unable to re invent Social Media!

But it is able to kill #Twitter and #bluesky ...

Sneak peek at the overhauled Agora client that will support logging in with either your #Mastodon, #Nostr, or #BlueSky account and seeing posts from the other two protocols!

Super awesome to see what’s possible thanks to amazing bridges by @alex and @snarfed.org and @cheeaun for the awesome Phanpy base to build off of

Constantly hearing ”got tired of Mastodon’s technicalities, Bluesky is simple and amazing”.

How we could design Mastodon to be more simple and have less technical-feel to it? UI is one thing, but that will not cut it all. I have probably said this before, but I am starting to believe no matter what we do we can’t ”win”. The narrative might need to change. 🤷‍♂️

A simple #ActivityPub <-> #Bluesky interop MVP I don’t see mentioned a lot is the ability to fully oEmbed an apub/atproto post on its opposite platform. This would allow for a kind of quote-posting across networks.

If that could somehow be combined with a WebMention to inform me that my apub post has been shared elsewhere and vice versa, we’d have significantly greater cross-border connectivity than the status quo.

A Bluesky dev has responded with interest:

I have 1000 invites for Mastodon. Who's interested? #Bluesky

Hey, Fedi peeps!

I'm working on an opinion piece on what the #Fediverse, #BlueSky, and #Nostr can all learn from each other, in terms of features and capabilities.

What would you say is a strength of the Fediverse? What would you say is a weakness / could be better? 🤔

@Jonathan Lamothe There's already a connector addon for #Bluesky contributed by @Michael Vogel that will be released this September.

This cartoon has prophetic characteristics:

The "left" / "liberal " users of #Twitter will fatten #Mastodon user numbers, whereas the the burning bird on the right might yet rise again like the #Phoenix out of the #Birdsite ashes as #Twitter2.0 (aka #Bluesky.)

Thus it is envisaged by #Elmo and his #PayPal, not-my-friend, @ Jack after #Twitters final demise.

Purefied by fire, only right-wing users and easily gullible #ElmoFanboys will remain on #Bluesky.

From a preliminary ~12h sample of #bluesky / #atprotocol , a small number of accounts receive most interactions. This is an obvious byproduct of the way the default algorithmic feed prioritizes posts.

- 5% of accounts received 72% of likes, 1% of accounts received 41%
- The top 5% of accounts make 48% of posts
- 37% of accounts receive no interaction
- The median account received 1 like.

Just a quick, incomplete look, but ya looks like an engagement farm
Line graph showing the cumulative sum of likes on the y axis vs. accounts on the x axis. Vertical lines indicate different quantiles of likes per account (0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 0.9, 0.95, and 0.99)

The line hovers near zero for the first two-thirds of the graph, but starts to increase around the 0.75 quantile. at 0.9 it is at ~100,000, and then the line rises sharply to its maximum at ~450000 through the 0.95 and 0.99 quantiles.

If the network was "flat" where everyone received the same amount of interaction, the line would be a straight, diagonal line. The amount of convexity in the line indicates the degree to which the network's interactions are concentrated on the top accounts.

lmao taking a look at #ATProtocol / #Bluesky's implementation of #DID, and I think they missed the "decentralized" part in their "placeholder" DID method.

Your domain's DNS entries just contain a (truncated) hash that then has to be resolved at plc.directory

recall that the DID method (plc) is part of the DID, so a different method (eg. web) is a different DID. to switch, you'd need to set an alsoKnownAs entry. plc only supports AT handles for alsoKnownAs.

https://github.com/bluesky-social/did-method-plc#did-resolution
DID Resolution

PLC DIDs are resolved to a DID document (JSON) by making simple HTTP GET request to the PLC server. The resolution endpoint is: https://plc.directory/:did

The PLC-specific state data (based on the most recent operation) can be fetched as a JSON object at: https://plc.directory/:did/data
