Ed Zitron comments in the last episode of tech won't save us something that I find interesting to point out about #generativeAI , even if it is obvious:

Let's imagine we all accept #AI generators and create a new internet based on them (or a large majority, at least). In that case (which is somewhat the business model pursued by #bigtech), we would reach a point where systems would be able to be trained only on content created by themselves.

Thanks @parismarx 🥰

I worked hard on some 3D artwork. Now I'm going to publish it on social media and enjoy the likes and responses. 😊

I worked hard on some 3D artwork. Before it will be ready to publish, I need to make a compilation of work-in-progress screenshots and wireframes, to prove that it's not AI-generated, and to avoid people asking what AI prompt I used to generate the image. 😖😖

There’s a lot of buzz about #GenerativeAI at the organizational level, but how do #developers think and feel about it? Help the Developer Success Lab answer this by participating in this brief (~10 min) research survey and we’ll make a $1000 donation to an OSS nonprofit organization chosen by participant voting. This survey is open to all developers, software engineers, & engineering managers. Survey Link: https://pluralsight.co1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_5aLLBEwj3AKMEiG

A few absolute shockers in the list of websites the Washington Post has revealed are used to train Google's generative AI tools. Apparently including the likes of 4Chan, Breitbart, and RT.

From WaPo:

"Meanwhile, we found several media outlets that rank low on NewsGuard’s independent scale for trustworthiness: RT.com No. 65, the Russian state-backed propaganda site; breitbart.com No. 159, a well-known source for far-right news and opinion; and vdare.com No. 993, an anti-immigration site that has been associated with white supremacy.

"The top Christian site, Grace to You (gty.org No. 164), belongs to Grace Community Church, an evangelical megachurch in California. Christianity Today recently reported that the church counseled women to 'continue to submit' to abusive fathers and husbands and to avoid reporting them to authorities."

Since the hype around AI accelerated, a lot of people have been looking for meaning in the text generated by large language models and tools like ChatGPT. But that doesn’t mean they’re intelligent, and there’s a real danger in thinking they are.

On #TechWontSaveUs, I spoke with @emilymbender about how these technologies work, why they don’t reflect how humans use language, but why we want to believe they’re talking to us.

Flying back from #SxSW where I evangelized #ActivtyPub, #Mastodon and the #Fediverse. It’s crazy how few people have even heard of this movement and all anyone could talk about was #GenerativeAI. I felt like an eccentric prophet holding a sign with scrawled writing “The end of the walled gardens is nigh”

But as many of you on Mastodon already know, the dawn of the open social web is here now and next SXSW is likely to be very different.

I love every piece that considers copyright and Mickey Mouse, so this one is obviously a great one: Jon Stokes, in Reason, shows how generative AI poses a challenge for studios like Disney. And highlights a current effort to make generative AI models - in their current form - illegal, as forms of infringing derivative works. #copyright #generativeAI #MickeyMouse
