I have my own (managed by masto.host) #Mastodon instance since 4 years.

On a typical day it handles 20.000 tasks (pushing new toots, synchronising, cleaning up etc).

Yesterday it went to 500.000 tasks.

And that's just one simple single-user instance. It's almost magical how the federated, distributed network of all ActivitiyPub instances managed to survive that brutal Tsunami of yesterday.

In short: We are ready for a new and better future, free from centralised gatekeepers.
Sidekiq history of my Mastodon instance, the last 6 months. 20000 jobs per day is the baseline. Starting end of October, growth. That reached 500000 jobs queued on 2022-11-18

Good Night DEC Alpha, you have served us well.

Our last DS10L was pulled from the cabinet to make space for #mastodon and the growing #fediverse

This machine was put into service in 2003 and ran up until 2013 when it was given less public duties. It could famously achieve 1500+ days uptime only being taken down during maintenance cycles. Never had a CPU fan failure!

It ran NetBSD 1.5 up to 6.2.

@netbsd it is an end of an era!

I appreciate these wellness preferences in my #mastodon client, Tusky. These numbers can turn fun into "work", a sort of perpetual performance review 😅
Wellness options, including limiting notifications and showing of stats on posts and profiles

This is why I have mixed feelings about #Mastodon going mainstream, data scrapers are a much bigger threat for us now. Just because I decided to make a post public doesn't mean it can be scraped, archived, and stored in an entirely separate database. This is a form of #SurveillanceCapitalism and us #Fediverse folks hate it with a passion.

What do now? 😭

20,000+ followers here at #Mastodon after less than three days is a huge encouragement.

Thank you for welcoming us in #fediverse and for your incredible support. We need it. The #memory needs it.

I really like the new #Mastodon feature to follow tags. This brings topics I care about directly to my timeline. 🚀 Only drawback, this probably doesn't work that well on small or even single-user instances.

People grumbling that #Mastodon is slow at the moment... You just turned up with 1 million people in a tiny, rural village and you're complaining there's a queue to get into the only tearoom, which is run by gay pensioners Babs & Maureen as a retirement hobby on Mons-Weds. Relax!

I'm about to leave Mastodon for a few months. Not because I had a bad time, or couldn't find interesting people, or don't think the concept of a fediverse is dumb. On the contrary, I think it's great.

I just have other stuff to do. But before I go, I want to share some thoughts as an ex-Twitter designer and someone who's been on Mastodon since 2018.

🧵

Almost 180k new users joined #mastodon yesterday, a new record. This third #twitterMigration wave happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum to #Twitter workers. Each wave is stronger than the previous one. Here is my updated plot showing the three consecutive waves.
The plot shows the graph of the number of new users in the Mastodon platform as a function of the date for the last months.
It can be seen that until Musk's purchase was completed, the daily new users were about one thousand.
It jumped to twenty-five thousand during the first migration to Mastodon, just after the Musk's purchase of Twitter was completed on October 27.
A second jump to 100k new users per day happened in the second wave, just after the massive layoffs in Twitter on Nov 4th.
Finally the third jump to almost 150k per day happened after Musk's Twitter 2.0 ultimatum on Nov 17th.

I feel like I'm being followed...

Just installed Friendica on our #LAMP account. Not sure what to do next, how to get a "feed" full of "content". I'm into #data #transparency and #left politics, #python and #ruby programming, applied #math, doing #mastodon @n8chz and I #blog at https://astoundingteam.com/wordpress

I honestly did not expect to see a day where remote #Mastodon instances would be slower to load than my #Friendica node.

Thats one hell of a design for #mastodon :mastodon: 🎉

Self explanatory statements below. I have a theory on this.
Please boost if you take part

I feel like #Mastodon giving up the hero image and theming was a mistake.

Just to clear up some confusion about how hashtag following works on Mastodon apps:

If you follow a hashtag on Mastodon, posts from those followed tags will be visible on your home timeline on the website AND in all the apps.

So, for example, you could log in through your server's website, follow the tags you want, and then go back to using your favourite app.

If you want to follow more tags, you can currently only do that through a website or Android apps Fedilab & Subway Tooter.

#Mastodon

For the first time (that I noticed) on the channel, #Mastodon brought a video more views than Twitter. And no, it wasn’t the video about the fediverse, it was the latest #Linux news video.

Both are really small compared to what Google search brings, but still, it’s kinda cool. And my Twitter following is way bigger, so it’s doubly cool.

Has anyone written about #Mastodon access in countries which sometimes block access to social media (e.g. Egypt, Russia, Iran, China, Saudi Arabia, etc)?

It seems to me there's power in the distributed network - making it all but impossible for a government to IP block the entire #Fediverse.

That's an enormous advantage.

Your instance was upgraded to #Mastodon 4?
Great, let's you introduce "follow tags" feature with #Fedilab.

Please, read descriptions in media.
In main menu, we added an item "Followed tags" that allows to quickly manage them. In a timeline tag, you will see two icons.
One to follow the tag and another one to pin the timeline (+).
Icons are only displayed if the action is possible (ie: you don't already follow or pin the timeline).
You will see the list of followed tags.
Clicking on an item will display the timeline for that tag and at the top right you will be able to unfollow them.

We are extremely proud of the work accomplished at #W3C in the Social Web group, culminating in 2018 in the release of the #ActivityPub standard, a notable implementation of which is... #mastodon !
We are also humbled and inspired by the energy that we are seeing on the Fediverse, the good will, how constructive and helpful discourse embodies truly social interactions.

Huh, cool. My toot made it on #TechCrunch 💪

Unfortunately they got the "Image Credits" wrong haha :flan_laugh:

Somehow this gives me a feeling they don't get it really :thinktink: I mean it's in the screenshot even lol

Anyone from TechCrunch on #Mastodon by any chance?
Some servers are having fun with the idea of verification in a less-than-official fashion. For example, the mstdn.social server lets you add blue-and-white checkmarks and other emoji to your display name if you’d like, which make you look verified, even though these don’t mean anything. (Sort of like Twitter’s new verification system! But for free!)

!Friendica Support Weird as it is, now with Mastodon 4 supporting things such as editing posts and subscribing to tags, the corresponding features find their way into Mastodon client apps (most prominently #fedilab which in 3.7.0 supports at least hashtag subscriptions) too. Are there any plans to make #Friendica Mastodon API client implementation aware of / able to work with that...? Worth writing issues for that right now?
(Talking open standards and #fediverse and all, it really would be great to see a platform-independent portable client API here too; at the moment it seems whenever #Mastodon releases new features and the clients follow up, it causes confusion or "breakages" elsewhere...)

As the media focuses on fedi and #Mastodon, I would like to point #journalists covering it to an important piece — not on fedi nor social media, but on communities and how harmful rock-star culture is:
https://hypatia.ca/2016/06/21/no-more-rock-stars/

I think Eugen deserves a lot of credit for helping create this space. And I honestly think he's a great guy, and doing his best.

But it would be way healthier to focus on the community, instead of on a specific person.

Let's leave the cult of personality on :birdsite:.

With almost 6k instances of #mastodon I'm pretty sure some #scam is already free in the wild. Choose your instance wisely, be aware of the e-mail account you use and - as always - use a unique password.

Do you follow too many people?

Do you want to organise your Mastodon home timeline into several themed mini-timelines that are easier to navigate?

You can do this on Mastodon using the "Lists" feature, and here's a guide all about it:

https://fedi.tips/how-to-use-mastodon-and-the-fediverse-advanced-tips/#UsingListsOnMastodon

You can use Lists on third party apps like Tusky for Android or Metatext for iPhone/iPad, or on your server's website.

A lot of people are moving to @Mastodon, but I also get a lot of misconceptions and questions about how it works, and about this cool giant social network that is the #Fediverse, including @pixelfed or @peertube. So, to answer all these questions, and myabe introduce you to some other parts of the Fediverse, I think it's time for a quickstart guide!

Watching instance owners needing to react to the sudden influx of users has me reminiscing about Switter early days.

In March 2018, we (Assembly Four) deployed Mastodon to a VPS with 1.5GB of RAM and launched https://switter.at/ in response to FOSTA/SESTA that was pushing sex workers off platforms.

Word spread like wildfire, and I had to double resources 2 hours after the announcement. And had to double it 2 hours after that. We had to scale out in the first week.

This news doesn't lack a hint of irony:
Former Twitter workers create their own instance on Mastodon https://macaw.social/about

#Mastodon

The thing about Twitter is that it really lacks a lot of the features you'd expect from a true Mastodon replacement.

For example, there's no way to edit your toots (which they, confusingly call "tweets"—let's face it, it's a bit of a silly name that's difficult to take seriously).

"Tweets" can't be covered by a content warning. There's no way to let the poster know you like their tweet without also sharing it, and no bookmark feature.

There's no way to set up your own instance, and you're basically stuck on a single instance of Twitter. That means there's no community moderators you can reach out to to quickly resolve issues. Also, you can't de-federate instances with a lot of problematic content.

It also doesn't Integrate with other fediverse platforms, and I couldn't find the option to turn the ads off.

Really, Twitter has made a good start, but it will need to add a lot of additional features before it gets to the point where it becomes a true Mastodon replacement for most users.
