“More than 90% of the public library digital market is controlled by one private equity leveraged company that bypasses the library through their app, which makes digital readers think the rental app is their library. In the worst case scenario, this decision gives publishers carte blanche to continue to force libraries into unconscionable monopoly contracts and lock them into their closed surveillance apps.”

The Indy #library has given over control of audiobooks to Libby (Overdrive) completely.

For cost and space reasons they no longer acquire audiobooks on physical media and have no control, whatsoever, on which books Libby makes available. No means at all to request a missing book.

This is a huge mistake, I think.

I don't think this is isolated to Indy either.

This makes me so sad. The #library was a haven from my miserable, white trash childhood. I walked there nearly every day in summer, sometimes spending all day exploring every aisle. No one hassled me, I learned so much, it opened so many doors. #lgbtq #media #civilrights #freedom #idaho

Yesterday I started receiving targeted ads based on ebook borrows from my library (San Francisco Public Library). The content of those ads suggested that the targeters were aware of which books I chose to read.

The Sakya Monastery in tibet has a library comprising some 84,000 books. Most are Buddhist scriptures, but there are works of literature, history, philosophy, astronomy, mathematics, agriculture, and art. They date back centuries.

In 2011 they began to digitize the library. All books are indexed and about 20% have been fully digitized.

Born in 1852, Mary Titcomb had a strong desire for an education & career.

Mary became a librarian & making #books accessible to everyone was a priority. She came up with a children’s room & set up “book stations” in shops & post offices in town.

But Mary noticed people from rural areas weren’t visiting the #library. So, she secured funding to build & begin the nation’s first bookmobile. 📚

Time for another #introduction. My name is Chris Dolunt (he/him).

I live in #Michigan. I'm a #solarpunk (recovering #cyberpunk) focused on community support and #climate action.

I work in #library technology, building digital archives to support academic research.

I write #ttrpgs for fun. I wrote "Nyambe" for d20, "Rippers" for #SavageWorlds, and I'm a canon NPC (Kargas Dolunt) in Dave Arneson's Blackmoor. I've been nominated for (and lost) the Diana Jones, Origins, and Ennie awards.
