"Mooreā€™s law has effectively come to an end as integrated circuits canā€™t be scaled down any more. As a result, the improvement in performance per Watt is slowing down continuously. On the other hand, the demand for computational resources is set to increase considerably" #technology #computers #energy

Ukraineā€™s energy crisis drives green power decentralization

Ukraine wants to generate more #energy in smaller amounts closer to users, rather than centralized facilities that are targets for #Russian strikes. Though the war has created willpower to redesign the energy system, it has also created serious obstacles

Renewable energy projects have taken off as well. The Energy Ministry announced on July 2 that it had received 5,876 solar panels to power hospitals, as part of an agreement with the European Commission.

Hybrid systems, which integrate solar power, battery storage, and existing energy grid infrastructure, can bridge the gap between when a blackout begins and a hospitalā€™s generator kicks in

In the U.S., recent annual estimates of bird deaths due to:

Cats = 2.4 billion bird deaths

Collisions from building glass = 600 million bird deaths

Land wind turbines = <200,000 bird deaths

Some politicians claim wind turbines ā€œkill all the birds.ā€

Butā€¦ theyā€™re not really worried about birds. Rather, they prefer we stick with oil & gas over renewable #energy.

Fission is in the news, but few recognize that a woman physicist was behind the discovery.

Lise Meitnerā€™s brilliance led to the discovery of nuclear fission. But her long time collaborator Otto Hahn, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry w/o her in 1944, even though she had given the first theoretical explanation.

Albert Einstein called Meitner ā€œour Marie Curie." She also adamantly refused to work on the atomic bomb during WWII. https://www.aps.org/publications/apsnews/201502/physicshistory.cfm #women #history #science #energy
