So did I mention that no company or government pays me for the work I do?

But you can support my work if you want to live in a world where we have the Small Web as an alternative to the Big Web of Google, Facebook, and other people farmers.

I love how this “Created by AI, edited by humans” summary of the chat I had with Doc this month starts off mildly enough with “A great chat on FLOSS Weekly regarding alternate funding models to support ethical tech projects…“ and ends a few paragraphs later with “…Balkan provided an urgent call to action to avoid extinction at the hands of unchecked capitalism.”

Well that escalated quickly!

😬 👍

So often, I'm reminded about the broken state of IT today. Barriers to entry everywhere are ridiculously high.

Self-hosting anything is incredibly stressful, often requiring you to be skilled as a system administrator to the point where you could make a living off of it.

I know why, of course.

Capitalism rewards enclosure. Money flows to companies who want customers on their terms, so solutions are designed to service thousands of people and for professionals to operate.

We need #SmallTech.

Wait, what?… you don’t mean that your all-important secret for your Small Web site is going to be… A STRING OF EMOJI?!*

(Why yes, yes it is…) :awesome:

* Or, if you want to take all the fun out of it, a base256 encoding of your ed25519 private key that is purposefully impractical to write down somewhere or type in so you’ll be forced to practice good security hygiene and store it in your password manager.

Screenshot of Kitten running an app at ~/sandbox/kitten-auth-test-1 (git main branch, 62 changes). Alongside the normal output there is a highlighted box labelled IMPORTANT! that reads: “This line of emoji is your secret <line of emoji follows> It will not be shown again. Please save your secret in your password manager.”

Technology should be human-scale. This doesn't mean the average person has to understand it., It means the average person has a *path* to understanding it.

Currently most documentation is poor or already expects a certain level of understanding.

I should be able to ask "How does my system manage audio?" and be guided through a giant yak-shaving exercise without any former knowledge of audio systems

Can we document software that well?

The Small Web isn’t about going back to the days of GeoCities. It’s about going forward differently, using modern tech in a non-colonial manner.

It’s not about building clones of Twitter, YouTube, etc. There’s no way anyone can self-host a dozen different services. Instead, it’s about having a single-tenant place on the Web that you own and control without technical knowhow; a place you can add Twitter, YouTube, etc., *features* to.
