Note just by following a Threads user or replying to a post, Meta claims they are entitled to your personal data.

And what do they say they will do with your data? Provide you with "business services (including ads)."

If for whatever reason you never wish to interact with #Threads, you can personally block it for your account. This hides all posts and profiles from Threads, prevents anyone from Threads from following you, and stops your posts from being delivered to or fetched by Threads. Simply click the "Block domain threads.net" option on any Threads profile or post you see in Mastodon.

So annihilation.social, which seems to be an instance with known issues, is running a bot to identify and post about instances that are blocking #threads.

Other users are then using those posts to send messages to the instance admins asking them to justify their decision (to harass admins of instances that block #Meta, basically).

I noticed #Threads is blocked on your instance.

What stops you wanting to interact with Threads users? Knowing you're on small instance, I understand it's a personal decision.

I don’t think the interoperability in itself is cause for concern.

People signing up to #threads as their first Mastodon server seems more of a threat.

But I will observe with an open minded curiosity.

Quick reminder that mastodon.ie will be blocking any #Threads servers.

A lot of time was spent talking about this a few months ago. We were pre-emptive blockers. Some nice enough people running servers took a wait and see approach.

Then Threads launched and hosted, and still hosts, Libs of TikTok, PragerU and Gays Against Groomers.

Treating them like any Fedi instance, that's a block.

Feel free to mute any silly geese who think this is wrong.

Very worried by how people who have spent years building alternatives are suddenly saying federation with Meta is a good idea.

An open web requires open protocols, so I'm okay with #Threads opting into the ActivityPub protocol, if it actually ever does. But it hasn't. Not yet. I'm also okay with certain servers being insular and excluding Threads. Kinda strange to do this before we know how Threads will approach the fediverse, but #socialmedia lives and breathes on this kind of thing. And the Fediverse is built to handle it too. @rwg

I'm cautiously optimistic about #threads. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Threads now has a Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944) regarding "Third Party Services" like Mastodon. Should Threads interconnect with Mastodon via #ActivityPub, this addresses what they will do with our data.

Note that they will collect information from anyone "allowing Threads users to follow you or interact with your content". The information they collect will include your profile, your content, and your interactions.

#Threads is indeed automatically creating accounts for those who already have an Instagram account. Confirmed that with one of my lovely girlfriends.

That lovely 70 million number which Zuck is putting forward? That's just the active Instagram account number. That's it.

Folks, the reason #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg hasn’t launched #Threads in the #EU isn’t because the EU is determined to protect your privacy, it’s because the EU is determined to protect The Single Market (peace be upon it) from anticompetitive behaviour. It’s because they’re using Instagram to launch Threads and sharing data between them (and not with EU startups that might want to use that data too). It’s #antitrust, not #privacy. I'm of the opinion that #threads should not be engaged with in any way.

Not because I think it's a threat to the #fediverse, although it could potentially be.
Not because I think it will bring a huge amount of bad actors that will harass users on other instances, although that is definitely a risk.

My reason is simpler; #Facebook has done so much evil, society eroding shit, that I don't work with them on principle.

And Facebook knows that as well, which is why threads is instagram branded.
