An open web requires open protocols, so I'm okay with #Threads opting into the ActivityPub protocol, if it actually ever does. But it hasn't. Not yet. I'm also okay with certain servers being insular and excluding Threads. Kinda strange to do this before we know how Threads will approach the fediverse, but #socialmedia lives and breathes on this kind of thing. And the Fediverse is built to handle it too. @rwg

I'm cautiously optimistic about #threads. The recent excitement surrounding Thread's arrival on the Fediverse is concerning. To understand why this is not a good idea, consider their economic interest in harvesting data, their poor moderation, and their manipulations. Nothing good can come from their federation. Don't roll out the red carpet for them.

Threads now has a Supplemental Privacy Policy (https://help.instagram.com/515230437301944) regarding "Third Party Services" like Mastodon. Should Threads interconnect with Mastodon via #ActivityPub, this addresses what they will do with our data.

Note that they will collect information from anyone "allowing Threads users to follow you or interact with your content". The information they collect will include your profile, your content, and your interactions.

#Threads is indeed automatically creating accounts for those who already have an Instagram account. Confirmed that with one of my lovely girlfriends.

That lovely 70 million number which Zuck is putting forward? That's just the active Instagram account number. That's it.

It's a level of flimflam and shenanigans which we've come to expect from the man who decided to outright support a genocide with his platform.

Folks, the reason #Facebook/ #Instagram/ #Meta/ Zuckerberg hasn’t launched #Threads in the #EU isn’t because the EU is determined to protect your privacy, it’s because the EU is determined to protect The Single Market (peace be upon it) from anticompetitive behaviour. It’s because they’re using Instagram to launch Threads and sharing data between them (and not with EU startups that might want to use that data too). It’s #antitrust, not #privacy. It’s markets, not people.

I'm of the opinion that #threads should not be engaged with in any way.

Not because I think it's a threat to the #fediverse, although it could potentially be.
Not because I think it will bring a huge amount of bad actors that will harass users on other instances, although that is definitely a risk.

My reason is simpler; #Facebook has done so much evil, society eroding shit, that I don't work with them on principle.

And Facebook knows that as well, which is why threads is instagram branded.

Look I don't want to be that always cynical yelling at clouds person, but I wasn't that convinced by the @Mastodon statement. It was heavy on describing what the platform looks like right now, and extremely careful to not make any promises about the future, talk about moderation standards, or acknowledge any economic power imbalance between #Meta and the #fediverse. Also cherry-picked XMPP example over, e.g. email which has been raised by users. #threads

I completely support anyone’s decision to defederate, block or otherwise not interact with that platform. But if you do, I implore you do so because of truthful statements and reporting and not misinformation based on fear.

A large corporate shopping mall settles in a nice neighborhood with small local run shops and community centers. The new shopping mall says 'if we settle here, more people will come, and you all will benefit'. A few years later all small shops are bankrupt and the community is destroyed. What remains is a barren corporate landscape.
