“The Imperial need for control is so desperate because it is so unnatural. Tyranny requires constant effort. It breaks, it leaks. Authority is brittle. Oppression is the mask of fear. Remember that.”

This good read about the structural issues of police is doing the rounds again, so I thought I would share it again.

Interestingly, this also works for the police and rich white men at least in the US. We are the shield group while they abuse poor people and minorities.

Every abusive person keeps around them a cadre of people they are not abusive to.

These people are shields against criticism. They are there to nullify claims of harm.

If lots of people are reporting harm to you and you just "don't see it"

You're part of the shield group

I just protested police brutality the only way my entitled white male ass figured out to do safely: by sending a mildly worded email to my local precinct to ask that one of their officer removes a Punisher/Thin Blue Line sticker from their personal car. #DefundThePolice

After a recent interaction with the police, I've noticed them:
  • Asking me the same questions over and over, to which I gave the same answers.
  • Laughing with each other even though we called them because a stray bullet landed in our bedroom.
  • Walking and standing around my apartment as if they owned the place.

It took me a while to figure it out, but I realized that the police are LARPing in people's homes, treating them as NPCs. And it is completely in line with the "us vs them" mentality they've displayed since protests against police violence started.

Now, I'll admit some were considerate and serious, but lately I'm more and more inclined to think that it is in spite of their job and training.

Why "the rule of law" is meaningless in the US: Some people systematically face little to no consequences for breaking it. Today's case in point: judges. #BlackLivesMatter #DefundThePolice

This scene of #PoliceBrutality got to me more than most even though there was comparatively less violence. It is beyond good and bad apples. It’s pure domestic terrorism and the mayor’s response is abhorrent. #DefundThePolice #ElijahMclain #BlackLivesMatter

This racist fear of violence from people of color is motivating most unwarranted murders by law enforcement officers. And when it doesn't already exist beforehand, this fear is taught to law enforcement recruits during training, purposefully. #DefundThePolice #AbolishPrison

The conundrum with the #police is that officers happy to carry violence or violent orders shouldn't be cops, but officers reluctant to carry violent orders shouldn't be cops either.

I don't know if the person who wrote this is what they are claiming to be, and yet it is entirely irrelevant. The incivilities they describe are regularly reported elsewhere, and "Don't talk to the police" is valid advice in the absolute.

Please read it.

This disgruntled police officer unintentionally laid down exactly what would #DefundThePolice look like. A drastic reduction in mission scope down to the strictly necessary violence. Any other calls they mention could be handled by unarmed civil servants.

I don't know what gets to me the most, the possible order from the top as an ad-hoc justification, the casual violence in a country where a car is often vital to move around, or the reported grins and laughters from the cops to a journalist. Meanwhile, #ACAB and #DefundThePolice

.@StarTribune identified these officers as state troopers and deputies from Anoka County Sheriff's office. They were following directions to puncture tires from the state-led command center.
