If you use #GMail, #Google keeps records of everything you buy, even if you delete the email receipt, and even if you didn't buy the product from them. Here's metadata from my takeout showing price, delivery address, description, vendor, etc. #privacy

We're in 2021, we hear #privacy leaks daily and you would like to protect yourself but you are not technical?
First two very simple steps:
- Install Firefox on both your desktop and your smartphone, stop using Google Chrome. Bonus point if you add the uBlock origin addon.
- Install Signal to talk with your friends. You can continue to use whatsapp in the same time, that is fine. But start using Signal anyway, so when enough people will have done the same, you will be able to ditch whatsapp.

@Andreas_Schwab@twitter.com @1Br0wn@twitter.com @FantaAlexx@twitter.com @EP_SingleMarket@twitter.com When you control whole markets & 2+ billion users, being a digital silo is not an option. Way too dangerous for us and our democracies.

(Also: #interoperability does not break #security or #privacy. Ask @ara4n@twitter.com & the folks at @matrixdotorg@twitter.com. They know a thing or two about this.)

So, I'm checking the #FacebookLeak, some people in there doesn't even have a FB account. But it turns out they have a WhatsApp one. In the leaked data WhatsApp users' ID seem to start with 1000. It also includes gender, which is not something one declares when registering on WhatsApp.
Remember that the leak is supposed to be from 2019. That tell us that, 2 years ago, #Facebook was already linking whatsapp data inside Facebook, even when you don't have a FB account, and pushing data from facebook to your #WhatsApp data, like the gender. Two ways binding.

If you're in the EU and #Facebook leaked your data, you're eligible to join Digital Rights Ireland in suing the fuckers. DRI have a phone-number checker for you to see if you were affected:

To all them parents posting #newborn baby pictures all over social media! I hope your child does not grow up to be like me cuz then you are going to find yourself having to explain why you did such thing!
Every human being must have to make their own choices as far as their #privacy goes so that when they grow up they don't have to fix some bragging moments shared from some dumb parents!

An interesting reading about #Google and #privacy:

Could not agree more, @Hypolite Petovan This is the default fallback on why we should give up our #privacy protections. Funny they don't want the same logic applied to other things like, gun control, regulation of the financial sector, etc. . .

I never liked #Telegram in first place.

Shady homebrew crypto that once got broken, crowning themselves as "savior of #privacy" when nobody can verify the whole stack, and now this: #ads in chats.

Use #XMPP with proper #e2ee (like #OMEMO) or nothing at all. You can't have a realistic expectation of privacy otherwise.

This pretty mild take in my opinion is the reason why I moved from a free Gmail address to a paid @Fastmail plan. I don't know if they are selling me out like Google has been reported to do, but at least they have less of an economic incentive to do it. #privacy

Hot take: if we want privacy we need to normalize paying for software.

”TikTok is introducing Americans to a question that Europeans have struggled with for 20 years: a lot of your citizens might use an Internet platform created somewhere that doesn’t know or care about your laws or cultural attitudes and won’t turn up to a committee hearing.”

'Spy pixels in emails have become endemic' | BBC News

The use of "invisible" tracking tech in emails is now "endemic", according to a messaging service that analysed its traffic at the BBC's request.

Is an open secure instant messaging protocol not what is needed to allow any messaging app to communicate with any other, and to break the monopoly of Big Tech?

Wow I did not know how many (German) universities are already using @matrixdotorg@twitter.com for their probably hundreds of thousands of students and staff.

This article about a #CIA offshoot funding several prominent Internet #privacy projects is pretty damning on its own, but it will not change my app usage decision. I do not personally use #Signal to be protected from nation-state level #surveillance.

However, it put in perspective Edward Snodwen's recent "testimonial" for the app as being alive as a good reason to use Signal. Now I do not believe this is the main reason or even a reason at all he hasn't been assassinated on the US government orders yet.

Bottom line, even if Signal had a US-government backdoor, I'd still recommend its use to protect oneself from corporate surveillance.

Don't use the #Brave #browser, especially if you're #privacy -conscious.

1. Shitty crypto scam embedded into it (BAT)
2. Whitelists privacy breaking scripts (https://brave.com/script-blocking-exceptions-update/)
3. Embedded "Brave Today" in new tabs which can't really be completely disabled and makes a shit ton of requests, including tracking ones

There's a new "experimental feature" being tested in Firefox 83: sponsored sites in the URL bar.

"Mozilla works with advertising partners to place sponsored tiles on the Firefox home page (or New Tab) that would be useful to Firefox users. Mozilla is paid when users click on sponsored tiles."

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/sponsor-privacy

You can disable this by setting `browser.newtabpage.activity-stream.showSponsoredTopSites` to `false`.

WTF @Patreon is that an acceptable list of permissions just to verify my patreon name? Read all my tweets including the private one, access my contacts, follow or unfollow people for me, write or delete tweets with my account... the list isn't even over! No, hell no! #privacy

WTF Patreon
Is that an acceptable list of permissions just to verify my patreon name?

Read all my tweets including the private one, access my contacts, follow or unfollow people for me, write or delete tweets with my account... the list isn't even over! No, hell no!

Let's do a bad buzz here, shall we? Retweet this: (as patreon is obviously not on mastodon)

Since yesterday the #EFF 's #Privacy Badger #Chrome #extension has inexplicably gone into paranoid mode where all the third-party domains on pages I visit are blocked by default, and I'm not even mad, it's amazing.
