There are no known security issues with "Siacs OMEMO" / OMEMO v0.3¹ despite of what some very loud Signal fans would like you to believe. It has been audited by a third party² who took a longer look at it than all of the Signal fans combined.

Yes, #OMEMO v0.7+ (or TWOMEMO 😜) is a cleaner spec with more features (most notably Stanza Content Encryption). That’s why we wrote it. I’m a co-author. That doesn’t mean v0.3 is insecure.

I get that when you're working on stuff and not getting paid for it, it can make sense to seek the platforms with the lowest friction and barriers to entry, but between IRC, #Matrix (and by extension, Gitter), and #XMPP, there are plenty of options that don't include vendor lock-in.

Every time a corporate platform dies, the standards-based, federated world will get a little bit stronger. Someday the network effect will kick in and federated will be the default - again. Email managed to get there early, #XMPP nearly achieved it too (and still can, if we finally stop using walled-garden messengers like WhatsApp or Signal). Let's make interoperability a hard requirement.

A discussion about distributed federated systems else-network did bring up some concerning history that we should keep in mind:

#XMPP was, briefly, the dominant messaging system on the Internet. It was fully federated allowing hosting anywhere. Major extensions were being done by major companies (Apple adding voice and video for example). And it all fell apart because the three big providers (Apple, Google, Facebook) ditched it to have more control.

I never liked #Telegram in first place.

please stop describing #XMPP as "completely siloed": XMPP is federated and provides "transports" which are just like matrix bridges.

You make a point but please can't you cite any of the hundreds of walled garden messengers? Facebook messenger, Skype, Whatsapp, Slack... please!

the thing i don't like about Matrix is that it's positioned as a monolithic, centrally controlled protocol. XMPP wasn't just federated & interoperable at the protocol level; it's governance & ability to innovate was decentralized too. #xmpp was a base everyone could keep building forward with.
