Recently took place the most important #ESport tournament of the year for #Dota2 players and viewers, Valve's The International. I was a little worried when I read the blog headline "In-Game Advertisements at The International" from Valve, but to my good surprise, it was outlining how none of the teams sponsors names and logos would be appearing in-game through team banners, base logos and player name tags during the tournament's games.

After the Ryadh Masters at the Esport World Cup, the previous major Dota 2 tournament which heavily featured advertisements, both in and off-game, it is a breath of fresh air. Valve doing it right. 👍

The #Dota2 change logs keep delivering subtle sarcastic gems:

Fixed longstanding and game-breaking bug where the chance for hero melee damage block was 49% instead of 50%

Game-breaking, huh? 😏

This past week-end was my first time going to #Dota2 #TheInternational in Seattle, WA but from the few conversations I had with other attendees on my way home it was the most expensive and disappointing one to date since the yearly tournament started in 2001.

Oh well, I guess I had to try, and the little I saw of a city I had never been to before was nice.

#VideoGames logic from the latest #Dota2 change log:

PROXIMITY [LAND]MINES
- All flying hero units can now trigger the mines

🤔

I’m going to #TheInternational in Seattle this fall after all! I’ve only been to a #Dota2 LAN tournament once before, the #ESLOne New York in 2015, but this is the big one. I’m excited to feel the audience energy during games!

#Valve released patch notes for #Dota2 version 7.34 using mostly emojis. #RandomShit #VideoGames

At a major #Dota2 tournament organized in the United Arab Emirates, invited Eastern European team "BetBoom Team" sponsored by the eponymous online bookmaker had to change their name to "BB Team". I assume it has to do with gambling being illegal in the UAE, but the English casters kept making fun of the name change by coming up with various expansions of the contrived acronym:
  • BeBop Team
  • BoomBoom Team
  • BedBath and Beyond
  • BasketBall Team
  • BoomBox Team
  • BingBong Team
  • BumbleBee Team
  • BeanBlobs Team
  • BlockBuster Team
  • BikiniBottom Team

What UAE-safe name would you have suggested?

While watching a #Dota2 tournament, during a winner's interview with professional player Quinn "Quinn" Callahan, he was asked which was the strongest feeling between the joy of a victory and the disappointment of a defeat. He immediately answered that losing felt worse than winning felt good. If applied to all the contestants, it would mean the net sum of player feelings during this tournament would be crushingly negative.

Maybe this is what I dislike about competition for myself. Even winners don't win as much as what losers lose in the process. Even a zero-sum game would be an improvement over the current state of competition.

Not the first time I’ve seen Chinese pro #Dota2 players sport random French words as their in-game nickname, but this one took me by surprise.

#VideoGames
A Chinese region Dota 2 pro game stream during the drafting phase. Screen shows two players’ webcam feed captioned with their in-game nickname. On the right, it reads “A.”, on the left it reads “L’enfer c’est les autres”, a famous quote by French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre.

I really like that professional Dota 2 #eSport teams are still using paper notes during the strategic phase before each game despite everything else about their activity being digital.

Valve has announced that their annual #Dota2 tournament The International would take place in Seattle and the play-offs are on the Oct 27th-29th week-end. I've been wanting to attend The International for several years, but so far it has taken place in remote locations around the world I wasn't able to fly to.

This year it finally would be doable for me, but I wouldn't want to go on my own (or inflict this on my partner), do I know any fellow Dota 2 enthusiasts planning on attending the event with whom we could group together?

Please boost for reach! #VideoGames

I am longing for an official Dota 2 board game so that I can accurately recreate the video game experience of having neither time nor friends to play it with. #VideoGames #BoardGames #Dota2

I never had to think about it before getting into #Dota2 #eSport , but how do fans usually reconcile with roster changes for teams not tied to a specific city/region/country like most eSport teams? What makes such a team’s identity if not their players?

Oof, this stings, but it's fair, no #Dota2 tournament I've watched in the past couple years escaped the betting sponsorship, some have even been going for cryptocurrency exchange sponsorship. I love the game but man it's depressing. #VideoGames

I’m watching this #Dota2 tournament and I can’t stand seeing the two best teams of this event win games, which happens pretty often by definition.

It isn’t healthy but I can’t help it.

#Dota2 It's been hard to watch Dendi's new formation, B8, lose match after match in this Dota Pro Circuit (DPC) season. Back in 2011 he won the first International competition with Na'Vi, and my heart, but since 2019 his journey as a pro player has been somewhat rocky. 😢

A #LEGO set to build, a #DOTA2 tournament on #Twitch to watch, fruit gummies to snack on, I’ll leave the adulting to you folks for today.
