Mystery AI Hype Theater 3000, Episode 28 - LLMs Are Not Human Subjects

Rumor has it on the next Android update, Google's Bard AI will help you write your text messages. But there's a catch: the processing is done on Google's servers, not your device, so your messages will be sent to Google as you type them. It will be possible to disable the AI, though. If your messages are sent to Google, they will be stored for 18 months and can be seen by humans in "anonymized" form.

Google update shows how Bard AI may work with your messages app

It is not ideal. If I had known this and read the fine-print, I probably wouldn't have shared it 😔

When #AI techbros train their #LLMs on people's works, these works are similarly removed from their individual context, "melted down" into the raw material — training data. Just disembodied words and phrases and sentences for the model to parrot later.

Historical and cultural and social context of these works is destroyed, melted away.

And it also happens without consent.
And it also happens on a gigantic scale.
And it also happens because techbros can sell the output.

That time in 2023 when Very Serious People started holding flashlights under their chins and intoning "Aaaaaaa Iiiiiiii" in a spooky voice until they all went and hid under the covers.

I think we need to dig into what is happening here, which is that, when faced with a system that presents itself as a listening, eager interlocutor that’s hearing us and responding to us, that we seem to fall into a kind of trance in relation to these systems, and almost counterfactually engage in some kind of wish fulfillment: thinking that they’re human, and there’s someone there listening to us. It’s like when you’re a kid, and you’re telling ghost stories, something with a lot of emotional weight, and suddenly everybody is terrified and reacting to it. And it becomes hard to disbelieve.

Surveillance Graphs
Vulgarity and Cloud Orthodoxy in Linked Data Infrastructures

Information is power, and that power has been largely enclosed by a handful of information conglomerates. The logic of the surveillance-driven information economy demands systems for handling mass quantities of heterogeneous data, increasingly in the form of knowledge graphs. An archaeology of knowledge graphs and their mutation from the liberatory aspirations of the semantic web gives us an underexplored lens to understand contemporary information systems. I explore how the ideology of cloud systems steers two projects from the NIH and NSF intended to build information infrastructures for the public good to inevitable corporate capture, facilitating the development of a new kind of multilayered public/private surveillance system in the process. I argue that understanding technologies like large language models as interfaces to knowledge graphs is critical to understand their role in a larger project of informational enclosure and concentration of power. I draw from multiple histories of liberatory information technologies to develop Vulgar Linked Data as an alternative to the Cloud Orthodoxy, resisting the colonial urge for universality in favor of vernacular expression in peer to peer systems.

What if we all agree to stop calling these systems #AI and just call them #LLMs instead?
