@grin I'm not sure what you mean.

There are a bunch of accounts on mastodon.social that are sending spammy Blockchain DMs to people around the fediverse, including on my home instance at #CoSocialCa.

We don't impose a captcha on remote DMs. It would be interesting to design a mechanism for that, though.

#CoSocialCa the trust and safety team is hard at work suspending and blocking spammers. Please make sure to report spammy accounts so we can reduce their impact.

Hey #CoSocialCa we just had about 40minutes of downtime from backing up the server and doubling its CPU/memory size.

And yes, I used my own account as a test to move over all followers.

Ping #CoSocialTechOps if you see something out of place.

If you're in #Canada and you're interested in helping start a #Coop #Mastodon service, sign up at https://cosocial.info/ to let us know.

We've got a moderators volunteer meeting tomorrow (Wed 15 Feb) for people who want to get involved.

I guess this went viral? I only have seagulls and pots and pan sounds on my Soundcloud, but here's the Canadian Mastodon co-operative I'm part of!

Is the end near for #Twitter ? Or are reports of its impending death greatly exaggerated? Alexandra Samuel (@awsamuel), author of Work Smarter with Social Media, explains what is actually going on — and what #Mastodon (and #CoSocialCa ) has to offer. On #CBC Radio’s On The Coast (Nov. 18, 2022) https://www.cbc.ca/listen/live-radio/1-46-on-the-coast/clip/15950273-the-state-twitter-mastodon-offers

I’m really excited about this. #CoSocialCa sounds like exactly the right approach for building the Fediverse to last. I’d love to contribute at some point :)

The #CoSocialCa #coop project also has me revisiting past work on #hacktivism, in #tech, in politics and with #NGOs.

The joy of #opensource culture is a can-do vibe: Dive in and make stuff happen. Contribute where you can.

NGOs & politicos pay more attention to process. Who's in the room matters. Start too fast, and you crowd out key voices. Agenda-setting (who starts the conversation) shapes outcomes.

These are tough to reconcile. But crucial for #Fediverse to be dynamic AND inclusive.

true! But I'm worried there will be a major outage on Twitter, and there will be a lot of people here <gestures widely> without a way to communicate.

I need to talk to more people in Montreal and Quebec. We can't have a pan-Canadian organisation that doesn't meet the needs of francophones. Any suggestions for who would be interested? #cosocialca

It's delightful to work towards a #mastodon #coop for #Canada with @evan and other lovely folks. Thoughts so far:

The #Twitter #migration creates a sense of urgency. But that rush is at odds with creating safety, a broad leadership team, real accountability structures...all the things that might actually make for a healthy community.

We've seen plenty of fast-start sites. It's hard but powerful to slow down & create conditions for lasting success & inclusion.

#CosocialCa is a project I'm part of to create a member-owned co-operative for Mastodon servers in Canada

@cosocial I want to give a quick update on our work on #cosocialca.

I'm used to technological solutions to social problems, so I started out planning to file incorporation papers by EOD Friday and have a big server up by midnight.

Then everyone who needed to would sign up, and it would all work out, right?

Fortunately, cooler heads among the interested group prevailed.

Centralisation of communications media is an extremely powerful force.

The typical remediation for centralization is regulated public utilities is breaking up a monopoly into a cartel of 3-5 local monopolies.

Also not great.

We are participating here at a very rare occurrence of decentralisation.

For everyone who thinks this is important for our lives and for the world, it is incumbent on all of us to build structures now that hold this ground as the federation grows.

If we can fit about 10-100K people on a Mastodon server,

and we've got 38M Canadians,

then we're going to need 400 to 4000 Canadian servers.

Let's start building them.
