In the Bedford-Stuysevant neighborhood of #Brooklyn, close to the Tompkins Ave-Hancock St intersection lives the so-called “Bed Stuy Aquarium”. Born out of a leaky fire hydrant and an unfinished sidewalk, this tiny pond is now the home of several goldfish.

This ad hoc installation even has a Linktree page: https://linktr.ee/bedstuyaquarium

A sidewalk fire hydrant is surrounded by a tiny fish pond decorated with colorful aquarium fixtures in the cavity where concrete is usually poured. A few signs advertising the “Bed Stuy Aquarium and a couple benches complete the tableau.

My #Brooklyn neighborhood black woman Santa > Your Santa.

On my way back from buying yet another LEGO bin from the mom of a 13-year old boy who’s done with it, I stumbled on the Open Source gallery in the South Slope neighborhood of #Brooklyn.

It isn’t so much a gallery as a reconverted residential garage, but the current exposition PRECIPITATE by the SCOPE collective is definitely thought-provoking. I’ve been joking for years about the #Gowanus canal and how unhealthy it is thanks to decades of industrial sewage pumping into it, but this collective of artists and scientists decided to embrace this reality and exhibit the living sediment that evolved to survive the highly toxic man-made environment of the canal waters.

what are the best non-touristy things to do in #Brooklyn?

The other day I was walking on a #Brooklyn sidewalk when I saw a man throw some crumbs on the floor for the pigeons to eat. I was starting to get annoyed when he produced a handmade net catcher and with a swift movement betraying a long experience, caught a couple of bids attracted by the food.

I have no idea what he did with them (eat? sell?) but I’m glad he’s doing this service to the city 🫡
