NemO’s: I lived in Milan in Italy for a while and because I come from a small city surrounded by countryside this big city seemed like a desert of cement to me, the skyline was barely visible! Every huge metropolis seems like a stain of oil that looks still but is slowly expanding and gulping everything down! I felt the necessity to show and tell the story of the expanding city that feeds on nature and expels cement waste!

“ATLAS”

NemO’s: In the district Santo Stefano of Bologna, the 8000mq of the ex military barracks Masini is the place of the social center LABAS. This place has a significant history, during the war the partisan’re was imprisoned, tortured and killed. Today here develops a reality that produce and guarantees social cohesion. LABAS makes projects for a food sovereignty with Orteo, a district’s social garden, and other projects for self production. They make projects for human rights and help students, unemployed and retirees with housing rights. LABAS also organize event and initiatives for family and children. In this way the yard of the barracks becomes a open square for all citizens. The inhabitants of the district really appreciate this reality but now LABAS is in danger of eviction. ATLAS, the mythological figure that holds the world on his shoulders, is my solidarity contribution to this reality. I’ve draw a man that holds his big head in his shoulders. The head, mind and history, when big are more difficult to hold up. If something is complex and have a relevant history we have a burdensome load of responsibility.

Chemis: This painting is inspired by the history of the house in Jateční Street in Pilsen, which was used for housing low-income families and was notoriously known as the Romani ghetto. These socially excluded areas are like a vicious circle, which seems to be a difficult challenge for politicians and local residents.

Often, these buildings are the only possible place that provides people with a home, a refuge and safety for themselves and their children. But it’s even harder to get rid of the stigma when you live in such a place. Made at Wallz Festival.

Alegria del Prado: My work is based on the use of animals and plants as symbols. This time, I researched the fauna that can be found in Russia and chose the Siberian tiger, which, to my taste, may somehow represent the Russian people because of its strength and beauty. It doesn’t really have a literal explanation of the elements that might appear in the image, I think the animals themselves are already expressing emotions and ideas to those who contemplate them.

International Mural Festival: This is a collaboration of two artists – Octavio Alegria from Mexico and Esther del Prado from Spain. They have been working together since 2010. In their work, they mainly create dream worlds, calling for harmony between nature and the modern world. Interestingly, to create this mural, Octavio did not use any projector or markup. How did he do it, let’s keep it a secret.

Ali Zakir: “It was on Independence Day of the Republic of Kazakhstan. We decided to make something pleasant for the residents of the city. Previously, children were always drawn, as they are our future. Here they wanted to show the sun and a boy in a blue T-shirt – the colors of our flag, which mean a bright future.”

“Originally, we were into graffiti, and we were always interested in doing something big. Somewhere in 2010, we started painting murals for our own money. Then they started calling us to different cities. To date, we have already created about 30 paintings: in Almaty, Nur-Sultan, Kostanay, Karaganda, Taldykorgan, Atyrau and Aktau.”

Case Maclaim: I believe the actual beauty of fairy tales is that it is up to our imagination how the character looks and moves and that version is not really up to debate, as it is just like a fingerprint, very unique and personal. With this mural in the old, historical city center of Madrid I wanted to try a different approach. So I gave the viewer a new character of a yet unknown fairy tale. I have high hopes that it will encourage specially the young audience to come up with their very own story, in which the lead is a confident, black child in a golden wheelchair and in a self-made mermaid costume.

Bifido (direct translation): This wall belongs to an old abandoned tobacco factory. For years, people of all sexes and ages have worked inside it, many hours a day. As is the case in thousands of other places. A life at work, a life without life. Life in your free time, spent being entertained in some refreshing recreational activity. I often think of the concept of free time. I hate free time. It is the charity of a society that wants us to be slaves. You are pregnant with a sweat that exhausts, without giving joy. Making a work at work for me meant expressing all my dissent against this absurd idea that work (as a mere sustenance) gives meaning to our life. Making art is my job and I love it.

Mona Caron: Gentiana Lutea – studding the landscape here in the highs of the Jura mountains, standing tall in the rolling meadows like little flagpoles marking the spots where you can dig for its magic and prized bitter root, a key ingredient of many vermouths, liqueurs, firewaters, syrups and tinctures, here in the homeland of Absinthe.

Bitter is a lost taste, even though bitterness is delicious and cures. Addiction to the sweet has narrowed the spectrum of pleasures that palates can enjoy, keeping many from healthy habits.

So I offer this bitter-rooted wildflower, a field weed as metaphor of resilience through the strength we gain by daring something feared, perhaps uncomfortably new but actually ancient, unearthing both medicine and pleasure which nature has been beckoning us towards all along. Follow the golden-flowered beacon.

In the streets of Hong Kong, nature meets art in the most unexpected way.

Banyan tree roots creep along walls and sidewalks, creating patterns that look like Piet Mondrian’s famous grid paintings. These roots form straight lines and squares, mimicking the abstract style of Mondrian’s art.

The Douglas Fir known as the “Giant Hand of Vyrnwy” was once the tallest tree in the UK, standing over 50 meters high.

But as it grew older and weaker, it became unsafe. Instead of cutting it down completely, artist Simon O’Rourke turned what was left of the tree into a giant hand sculpture reaching for the sky.

“The Forestry Commission, who are looking after the area, decided that it would be a good idea to have a memorial to the tree and left a 50-foot stem when they felled it,” said O’Rourke. “They invited eight artists to tender for the job, and I got it.”

The sculpture is now part of a place called The Giants of Vyrnwy, which inspired O’Rourke’s idea. “There are a few tall Douglas firs growing in the Giants of Vyrnwy area, and I was going on the giants theme,” he explained.

O’Rourke, who has been carving wood for nine years, used 12 different chainsaws to make the sculpture. He has also carved other things, like a swan, an angel, a kingfisher, a chipmunk, and a giant clock.

In 2011, the tree was found leaning dangerously to one side. It also had two large cracks going up from its roots to about 3.5 meters high. To keep visitors safe, the Forestry Commission decided to cut it down. Before this, a tree expert had climbed it to confirm it was the tallest tree in the UK, ensuring its story would be remembered even after it was turned into art.

In Warsaw, there’s a mural that pays tribute to Kora, a legendary Polish musician and cultural icon.

Created by artist Bruno Althamer, the mural spans the side of a large building, depicting the four seasons with dynamic colors and thoughtful details. One standout feature is how Kora’s hair changes with each season, blending beautifully into the surrounding artwork.

Kora was admired for her trailblazing music and unmistakable voice. She passed away in 2018, but her influence remains strong. This mural is both a tribute and a reminder of her lasting contributions, inviting viewers to celebrate her enduring impact on Polish culture.

The Four Seasons Concept

Bruno Althamer’s design uses the seasons to represent life’s cycles—growth, change, and renewal. Spring features soft pastels and blossoming flowers, summer is alive with lush greens and bright yellows, autumn glows with golden leaves, and winter is serene in shades of blue and white. Kora’s portrait weaves these elements together, anchoring the mural as a meaningful part of Warsaw’s artistic landscape.

Djoels: A few months ago, I enrolled in a sort of selection round to be able to do a mural in the Basque Country. Out of the (more than) 400 applications, 2 artists were chosen: one artist from Gran Canaria and Djoels. We were given a 13-meter-high by 8-meter-wide wall to work on. For 5 days, we were given a tour, information, and the opportunity to get to know the town. It’s a harbor town surrounded by mountains, slightly bigger than Egem but with a similar mentality. Everyone knows everyone, and stories spread quickly. People take care of each other, and history is kept alive.

Gabriel, my model, a retired kind man with a characterful gaze, stood out to me the most. He spent his life at sea, months away from home catching fish. I heard thrilling stories, including those of women and children who stayed on the mainland, fearing whether their father would return safely. Now he makes miniature boats. A true artist!

Every day, I ate fish, learned how to clean and prepare fresh fish. I walked in the harbor and then in the mountains. I tasted the food they made on the boats when they were away from home for months, sometimes with only 3 ingredients. And yet, it was delicious!

For two weeks, I lived like most people here, adopting a sort of integrated intermittent fasting, taking siestas, and enjoying pintxos (local tapas). I quickly adapted to the lifestyle here, but I still miss my home, my dog, and my loved one immensely!

I think after reading this, the work speaks for itself. Now, I just need to enjoy Bilbao a little longer, and then I’ll head back home on Saturday, towards my steak with fries and the West Flemish language.

Sharks in wheat field along Highway 8 in Ontario, west of Dublin, have become a tradition.

Latest shark-artist is Anne Melady, an 75 and retired nurse and landowner. Anne thought she would have some fun by placing these “shark fins” in her wheat field west of Dublin, inspired by another shark installation last year. She calls them Great Wheat Sharks. All Melady wants is for those driving by the field to get a laugh amid the pandemic doom and gloom.

In the bustling city of Campo Grande, Brazil, an abandoned bus stop has been revived and reimagined by DUUDOOR, an innovative artist collective consisting of father and son duo, Ernando Jacques Sanches and Eduardo Fernando Savala Sanches.

The pair had been on a hiatus from art, seeking inspiration and motivation to return to creating. When some friends showed them a project where a local artist had infused new life into a bus stop with Simpsons-themed art in Porto Murtinho, they knew they had found their muse.

Excited by the idea of not only creating art but also revitalizing neglected urban spaces, DUUDOOR set to work on their own bus stop project. What emerged was not just an aesthetic transformation of an ordinary space, but a demonstration of the power of art to spark joy and community engagement.

After completion, they reflected on the gratifying experience of witnessing the impact of their art. It was a reminder of art’s power to transform and inspire. Yip Yew Chong: “While visitors are having fun posing for photos, I also hope they will get up close to the mural to study the details. This mural at 30 Temple Street is now probably the most intricate outdoor mural in Singapore! I tried making the details authentic, balanced with aestheticism and fair representation of the 1970s-80s Chinatown Street Market.

Many visitors who saw me paint it realized I didn’t plan every detail in advance. I had a broad idea in my mind, and then along the way, I googled images of say, different veggies, fish etc and decided on the spot which to add onto the trays. As for the stall selling monitor lizards, frogs, turtles and pythons, I intentionally put it the background and painted in a blurry, indicative manner.

I was afraid some visitors may feel scared by the sight. During the painting, I polled a few visitors, especially children. They all said the scene is not scary, and they can tell they are snakes and lizards, phew! While adding the blood, someone commented, “it’s enough”! I really enjoyed the painting process of having visitors on the spot contribute to the creation of the mural!”
