I don't like how many podcast are doing video. Not just because I like listening more than watching (unless video actually adds something concrete). The real problem isn't the video part. It is the #YouTube (and to a lesser extent #Spotify) part.

I don't like podcasts becoming dependent on these corporations. They might experience a level of success in the short term but I think many of them will find out how precarious it is to rely on being featured prominently by those platforms instead of having real subscribers.

Advice for podcasters pivoting to video:

Remember that your podcast feed is still important. Use it. Add a link to the video for each episode, then encourage viewers to use the feed to keep up to date on your videos.

Just a reminder that if you're a #Spotify customer, you're paying the platform to give anti-vax, conspiracy-theory podcaster Joe Rogan $250M to spread dangerous misinformation.

I switched to Deezer. There are many other choices: Apple, Amazon, Tidal, Qobuz and others. If you are the type to abandon Twitter because of Musk, why pay Spotify to make Joe Rogan wealthy and the world less informed?

Over the past few years, Spotify spent big to try to take over podcasting. Now it’s shutting down shows, laying off workers, and disappearing well-known brands. What happened?

On #TechWontSaveUs, I spoke to Eric Silver about Spotify’s big plan to enclose podcasts so it could get more data and diversify away from music. Needless to say, it didn’t work.

Eric Silver: "Spotify, tried to do a vertical monopoly. It reminds me of the movies in the 30s, where it's like, 'We own the actors. We own the director. We own the script. You're going to film it on our lot. Our editor is going to be overseen by a guy in a suit standing over his shoulder, making sure he's not communist, and then we're going to put it out in our theaters.' And that feels very similar to what Spotify did."

If you care about building a music library you can listen to for years to come, don't use Spotify, and buck against the trend of exploitative streaming services. Learn about where to get DRM-free audio on our DRM-free living guide: https://u.fsf.org/1lr #EndDRM #BoycottSpotify #Spotify

I wish more people would fight for #Podcasting the same way people are fighting for the #Fediverse.

#Meta, #Tumblr, et al, are saying that they're joining the Fediverse (I'll believe it when I see it) and everyone is trying to figure out how best to deal with that.

Meanwhile, #Spotify and #YouTube have already #EEE #Podcasts by adding music podcasts that don't sync to #RSS feeds and not providing #VideoPodcasts with RSS feeds at all. No one is batting an eyelash about that!

This one goes out to recently arrived or aspiring Twitter refugees

Borders by #Kalandra is no doubt one of the most touching songs I have ever heard. It's deeply spiritual and harsh and I shiver every time I listen to it. Katrine Stenbekk made nothing less than a masterpiece.

#YouTube: https://youtu.be/zHh4t38f9AM
#TIDAL: https://tidal.com/track/151573160
#Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/track/7qxQsirGworaoQe9A3MqJy

#Norway certainly has some brilliant musicians. Kalandra is just one of many Norwegian bands and musicians I've been listening to lately.

In honor of #SpotifyWrapped season, fuck #Spotify and its 100 million dollar antivaxxer and LGBTQ+ hate middleman posterboy.

More odd stuff on #Spotify, I'm being recommended two songs by two different artists:
- Mel Walker by Casey Robinson https://open.spotify.com/track/5RWCKGNVM8SrvJOc38ZX3R
- Skolna by Jessie Elliott https://open.spotify.com/track/4xnD7sPati2FfUVNOHCvvg

Both songs are practically the same except for a missing drum instrument track. No information can be found about either artists online. I suspect someone set up tens or hundreds of Spotify artist accounts with random names, album covers and song titles to submit free loop track variations and collect meager royalties based on someone else's work.

And there's no built-in way to report any of this. 🤷‍♂️

Is it just me or is #spotify
getting somewhat… thinner?

For example only 4 of 17 tracks of Mad Max: Fury Road OST available. I find this a lot in my playlists recently.

I mean… arrrrr - gimme back Brothers In Arms https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hez8W3TceZU ! ☠️

@João Pinheiro E.g. :
- #RTBF, one major Belgian news :newspaper service, which is even a public service, shares your data iirc with around 300 “partners“...
- a major mobile video game 🎮 shares your data with 500 “partners”...

#Spotify or #Netflix shouldn’t share data of their paying customers, but I guess you have no choice, it’s either their way or the highway...
