A color photo of an old sluice built from planks an posts of lumber, now slowly rotting in the dry arid air beneath the desert Sun. The structure was used for panning ore. Water was piped into one end and released into the creek bed from the other. A corrugated metal roof offered scant protection from the elements, probably trapping and transferring heat to those beneath it. Still, the workers were probably glad that the harsh rays of the Sun were kept off of their heads, shoulders, and backs. The sluice sits beside a dry creek bed in a wooded canyon of sycamores, oaks, junipers, and manzanitas, and is now used occasionally to hold feed for horses.
