Portrait of Angel Sanz Briz mural

Artist: Okudart

Okuda San Miguel (Okudart) is a Spanish surrealist street artist and sculptor. Okudart is famous for his style of colorful geometric patterns that portray animals, skulls, and human figures.

His mural is dedicated to Spanish diplomat Ángel Sanz Briz (often called the “Spanish Schindler”), who saved as many as 5,000 Hungarian Jews from the Holocaust in 1944. The mural is located in the former Jewish Ghetto of Budapest. The Spanish embassy in Hungary supported the artwork.

Motivation is a Wonderland mural

Artist: Dan Ferrer

This is a piece from Spanish graffiti genius Dan Ferrer. It depicts an Alice-in-wonderland-esque child who has grown too big for the house she kneels within. If you’ve read or seen Alice you’ll recognize this as an interpretation of events from the story.

Alice is on the verge of growing up and is facing uncomfortable changes as a result. That is one of the points that Ferrer drives home with this piece. You’ll notice the plate of chocolate chip cookies in the bottom right-hand corner of the gigantic painting

The Rubik’s Cube mural

Artist: Neopaint

The Rubik’s Cube is an iconic Hungarian invention by Ernő Rubik, so it makes sense you’d have it immortalized on a Jewish District firewall, showing the iconic puzzle painted in 3D pointillist form, created from hundreds of radiating and colorful dots.

This is perhaps one of the most famous murals by Neopaint, an urban art collective. The artist says the piece reflects on the fact that in life “there is always a solution – not just one” – just like the Rubik’s Cube.

Paste-ups by 0036Mark

Artist: 0036Mark

0036Mark is a paste-up artist from Budapest, in his street art pieces the cartoon characters of the communist era come back to life spiced up with contemporary pop-cultural allusions. The artist’s creative paste-ups mainly focus on the ’70s-80s Hungarian animated tv-series and movies from VHS movies.

“What I do as street art is both parody and nostalgia at the same time, in which the works of this period (like my memories from childhood) get mixed up in my head. I merge the characters together as if this all was some big continuous film.” – as Mark said in an interview.

0036Mark’s paste-ups can be found mostly in the 7th district of Budapest (also known as the Jewish Quarter of Budapest), or in the downtown area.

His pieces became very dear to the citizens of Budapest, as often they make people smile with references to local anecdotes.

It’s the case of the paste-up of the first democratically elected Hungarian President of the Republic and Duck Tales’ characters. In 1993 the broadcasting of Disney’s cartoon was interrupted to announce the death of President József Antall, an episode that unlocks the memories of more than one generation of Hungarians.

Miss KK’s work is thought-provoking, inventive, and blends so seamlessly into the cityscape.

Miss KK is a mysterious female street artist, who, despite being a locally well-known fashion designer, manages to keep her face hidden by covering her mouth with her hand every time she appears in a photo.

A graffiti and hip-hop lover since her school years, she found her style in the usage of newspapers’ clips and Photoshop, creating dolls.

Her dolls became street art pieces, applied mostly to dilapidated walls, old phone boots, or construction sites. They are collages mixing model faces, fashion brands, and iconic accessories, and they usually carry a message, such as “Too much ego will kill your talent”.

“I used to make the collages out of much fewer photos, now I use at least 50 to make a doll, and they are also much more sophisticated and detailed. I also pay attention and check where each individual detail comes from what brand, and what designer made them, and then I tag all those on Instagram.” – as she said in an interview.

Guerilla mini statutes by Mihály Kolodko

Artist: Mihály Kolodko

The artist was born in Ukraine with Hungarian origins, he graduated from Lviv Academy of Arts. After dabbling in larger sculptures, Kolodko decided in 2010 to devote his work solely to the miniatures he’s now become famous for. Most of Kolodko’s artworks are guerilla sculptures, however, there have been commissions recently.

The majority of his mini statues can be found in the inner neighborhoods of Budapest, hidden away in nooks and crannies on either side of the Danube.

This tiny tank has a connection with the communist area of Hungary, the guerilla sculpture is

located just across the iconic Parliament building.

The small tank symbolizes Hungary’s 1956 revolution, as indicated by the bold white letting “Ruszkik Haza!” (“Russians go home!”) etched on the side of the tank.

“Dromeas,” also known as “The Runner,” is a famous statue located in Athens, Greece. It was created by Greek artist Costas Varotsos and is considered one of the most iconic sculptures in the city.

The statue stands tall, towering over its surroundings, and is made entirely of jagged pieces of glass that are stacked on top of one another. These pieces of glass give the statue a unique, blurred appearance, making it look as though the runner is in motion. This effect is enhanced by the use of transparent glass, which allows light to pass through, giving the statue a sense of fluidity.

My son, have you ever heard of something strange?

“Yes, tell me!” my son exclaimed with excitement.

“You know the new tree painting we did on the garage last week? Well, up until around the year 2050, it was not common for people to have paintings on their houses. Can you imagine that?”

“What? Were all the houses just gray?” my son asked in disbelief.

“Many of them were. People would usually paint their houses in one solid color, like blue or yellow, but it was rare to see more than one or two colors and almost never any pictures. Most apartment buildings, government buildings, and other structures were gray. Artists would sometimes go and paint on tunnels or grey municipal buildings, but their paintings would eventually be washed away by the government.”

“Was art forbidden?” my son asked, wide-eyed.

“Not exactly, but it had to be confined to specific buildings only. Some people believed that houses should not be painted with anything other than pale, solid colors. It was quite a dull and restrictive society.”

“Wow,” my son said, “that’s so boring.”

“Yes, my son, it was. But now, we have the freedom to express ourselves and add color and beauty to our surroundings. Now, let’s put on our jackets and go pick some fruit.”

Exploring the Significance of Street Art: Why it Matters:

As an artist, I know firsthand how important self-expression is. For me, street art is one of the most powerful mediums to accomplish that. Because street art is often created outside of traditional art institutions, it allows us as artists to bypass gatekeepers and create work that is not constrained by gallery or museum regulations.

But street art is so much more than just self-expression. It’s also a powerful tool for making social and political commentary. As street artists, we frequently use our art to bring attention to issues like injustice, inequality, and poverty. Street art has the power to spark change by bringing attention to these important issues.

Not only that, but street art can also play an important role in community-building. It can help revitalize neighborhoods and give locals a sense of pride and ownership. And as someone who’s lived in many different communities, I’ve seen firsthand how powerful this can be.

And lastly, street art is an important form of cultural expression. It reflects the values, beliefs, and aspirations of the communities in which it’s created. It can be used to celebrate and preserve cultural history, as well as advance inclusivity and diversity.

Street art is an incredibly powerful and important form of self-expression, social and political commentary, community-building, and cultural expression. It plays a vital role in shaping our cities and communities.

Her work is often associated with poetry, as many of her stencils include text that is often thought-provoking and evocative. Miss. Tic began her career as a street artist in 1985, and has since become one of the most recognizable and respected figures in the French street art scene.

One of the things that sets Miss. Tic apart from other street artists is her use of stencils. She often used the same stencil repeatedly, but with subtle variations, to create a sense of continuity and familiarity in her work. This technique allows her to convey a powerful message with a minimal amount of visual clutter.

In addition to her street art, Miss. Tic is also known for her activism and her commitment to using art as a tool for social and political change. She has often used her art to comment on issues such as gender inequality, racism, and poverty.

This 2,000-year-old mosaic unearthed in Antakya is the world’s largest, extending over 9,000-square-foot (about 850 square meters)! Truly an astonishing sight.

A beautiful well preserved mosaic was discovered while digging between vineyards near Northern Italian city of Verona, The mosaics dates back to around 250-400 AD and probably once was part of an ancient Roman villa.

In Istanbul, Turkey. They made a statue to honor a stray cat that used to sit in this position and watch the passers by. I lived there for a few months and they really love their cats (who are everywhere).

Simpsons!: This bus stop in Brazil, before and after an artist added their touch

In the bustling city of Campo Grande, Brazil, an abandoned bus stop has been revived and reimagined by DUUDOOR, an innovative artist collective consisting of father and son duo, Ernando Jacques Sanches and Eduardo Fernando Savala Sanches.

The pair had been on a hiatus from art, seeking inspiration and motivation to return to creating. When some friends showed them a project where a local artist had infused new life into a bus stop with Simpsons-themed art in Porto Murtinho, they knew they had found their muse.

Excited by the idea of not only creating art but also revitalizing neglected urban spaces, DUUDOOR set to work on their own bus stop project. What emerged was not just an aesthetic transformation of an ordinary space, but a demonstration of the power of art to spark joy and community engagement.

After completion, they reflected on the gratifying experience of witnessing the impact of their art. It was a reminder of art’s power to transform and inspire. This first project was financed solely by DUUDOOR’s own resources, but their work’s impact has led to offers of support for future projects, for which they are deeply appreciative.

Rejuvenating forgotten corners of the city with art, DUUDOOR’s project is a testament to the transformative power of creativity. Their initiative invites us all to imagine how we might use our own talents to breathe life into spaces around us. It’s a powerful example of how art can not only beautify a space but also bring together a community.

Sculptor Denis Defrancesco’s King Kong sculpture is a bronze sculpture that reimagines the iconic King Kong in an unexpected way.

Measuring 5.04 meters long, 2.10 meters wide, and 2.25 meters high, and weighing 2780 kg (6128 lbs.), this massive artwork has drawn attention since its debut in 2019.

Originally displayed on Pařížská Street in Josefov, Prague, the sculpture has since traveled internationally, engaging audiences and inspiring discussions across different cultural settings.

Tire zen master gorilla in Helsinki, Finland

From Atlas Obscura: “SITTING WITH THE SERENE POSTURE of a zen master on the campus of Helsinki University’s Viikki campus is one of the more unique animals to ever grace a university quad: a massive gorilla figure made entirely of automobile tires known as, Everything is Possible.

The huge piece of art is the work of Finnish artist Villu Jaanisoo who won a national invitational contest. Made out of rubber tires that were bent and shaped to form the colossal beast, the ape’s pose is more calm than menacing, even with the similarities to King Kong. From top to bottom, the creature is almost 17 feet tall. Students and visitors often climb up into the gorilla’s arms, looking about the size of an infant in comparison.

Helsinki University’s Viikki campus is known as the life sciences center for the college, focusing on the school’s biology, agriculture, and veterinary programs. Nicknamed the “Green Campus,” the gorilla-shaped tire pile might seem like a strange fit for the space, but the statue represents not only the diversity of life, but also the a focus on environmentalism and reuse. While these connotations may be foremost in the minds of the students that wander past the work each day, for many Everything is Possible simply represents the strange wonder of a world where a giant gorilla made of tires can exist.”

M_FRENCHI: Organised to raise awareness pf the ocean conservation and the issues raised by plastic near and in our oceans.

Anne: Both grey and harbour seals live along our local coastline. Sadly the seals often fall victim to things like ghost nets, six-pack drink pulls, boats and jet skis. This mural is inspired by local activism and the British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) who help save our ocean wildlife.

Artist Ahmad Yasin

For Palestinian artist Ahmad Yaseen, spiny cactus plants make perfect canvas for his drawings. The artist has impressed many by his original way of expressing Palestinian suffering: using something that no one had contemplated.

Rather than painting scenes from the ongoing conflict between Israelis and Palestinians, Yaseen draw elements that provide glimmer of hope. His favorite set of drawings is of two newborns – one is resting in his mother’s arms while the other is breastfeeding.

Rexenera Fest: Alba Fabre tends to construct poetic narratives from an open and inconclusive point of view. His work, located on Avenida da Milagrosa, introduces us to the intimacy of an anonymous couple, in a moment of union in which different ideas are whispered in a veiled way, deconstructing certain roles of classical art and bringing them to our contemporaneity.

Male fragility, vulnerability, and sensitivity contrast with the strength and wholeness of the female figure, while their bodies merge to form a delicate, powerful image under a quick, precise brushstroke.

Breathing is the most natural acts, no need to be deliberate at all. Breathe in, breathe out. Slow down the beast inside you, learn to calm yourself in spite of all the disturbances outside.

Satr: I’m the kind of person who gets nervous relatively easily, and when I arrived in Europe last week, I couldn’t help but feel a bit nervous in a new environment. But my new friends LEDANIA and SONG said, “Don’t be nervous, Satr. exhale, inhale, just feel your breath.” After that, I really wasn’t so overwhelmed. That night I went back to the hotel and thought back to this experience that had happened during the day. The idea slowly took shape as I drew and listened to their music.

I named it “Breathing”:

Satr: My draft concept is; A lot of things have happened in the past year, and each thing will have different answers in different positions. I drew a mountain lion. The flame is its consciousness. It ignites in front of it and surrounds it in a circle. I hope that anyone who sees this work will find a peaceful mood. Face these things calmly.

About SATR: She works and lives in Guangzhou (China) and has been doing street art since 2013. Her original spray painting atomization shape method makes her animals very dynamic, taking fog as the shape.

This is different from the realistic shaping of western oil painting, and deeply studies the permeability of graffiti spray paint, so that her works still have the charm of ink in addition to peeling off traditional Chinese painting tools.

SATR’s works can see the profound exuberance of western graffiti and the soft “XieYi “(traditional Chinese painting style in vivid expression and bold outline) brushwork of oriental painting, which runs through her works all the time. The signature of the ancient seal cutting style is the oriental imprint that she conveys to the outside world.

KIKI: It’s hard to think of the moment when I really became an artist. Maybe I was always an artist, unconsciously. I dare say we are all born artists, but we lose curiosity as we grow up. The worlds we create and the games we play when we are young makes us artists. Over time we stop being artists as we get older, in my case it never stopped.

KIKI: In the end nothing is mine, we are the result of what happens for us, I simply let it be, (the really difficult thing is to let it be) letting it be gives us a unique identity in art. In the end, it does not matter how that identity is configured, what matters is what it communicates, what the viewer perceives.
