On my own time, I have to read a ~50 page document produced for the #EuropeanCommission in order to effectively participate in a two hour meeting where #FDroid is pitted against #BigTech on the #DigitalMarketsAct and its requirements around installing and allowing other #AppStore options.
Its all NDA'ed so I can't ask for help.
This game is really rigged for the megacorps. Wish me luck! Here's to fighting the good fight!

To celebrate Conversations being back on the Play Store and to deny Google their 15% cut I made the app free for the next ~48 hours. 😜

If you are new here: Check out #XMPP. It's federated, provider and vendor independent instant messaging. It’s great!

Or get it from #fdroid - That version even has address book integration and public channel discovery! 😂

@Mapilio @Mapilio
When #android app available in #fdroid ? Or any other google-free way like apk file on your website ?

#FDroid in an #EU "Pilot project — De-monopolized access to EU applications"... "The focus of the pilot project includes EU institutions releasing their apps on existing alternative app stores, including f-droid that aims at promoting apps released under open source licenses"

In my work with #FDroid I've discussed our work with gov regulators for South Africa, UK, EU and Japan as well as competition litigators from multiple US States and the EU. From this, I'm starting to see a picture of #Apple's and #Google's semi-related strategies of making "sideloading" (installing apps outside of their #gatekeeper control) look bad as a way to keep their monopolies in the face of #DMA and other regulatory actions. I'm still looking for data about the actual real world risks 1/

Before me asking others here in the #fediverse for recommendations about #Fdroid #apps , I did not know about #KryptEY

https://github.com/amnesica/KryptEY

It is an #Android keyboard for secure #E2EE communication through the #signal protocol in any messenger.

When reviewing apps, F-Droid takes the user’s point of view, first and foremost.

Various apps have features that are not in our users' interest but that don't make them ineligible for inclusion, like tracking or using non-free network services. Which is why we clearly mark apps that have these "Anti-Features", so that users are able to make an informed choice whether they find those acceptable or not.

The latest version of the F-Droid client is now able to show a description explaining why an app has a specific Anti-Feature, so users don't need to find that information elsewhere to make an informed decision.

And thanks to the hard work of @IzzyOnDroid over the last few days, we now have those descriptions for many apps in our repository, so the client actually has something to show the user.

Well, I had to fight off putting f-droid.org behind cloudflare. What really scares me is how some people who talk a lot about privacy and foss don't get why companies like cloudflare are toxic for the free and open web ...

Now we're spending ~100€/month on webservers plus my volunteered time maintaining it. Cloudflare would sponsor #FDroid traffic for free. But I think it's worth my effort. 😀

Did you know that #FDroid isn't only informing you about #tracking with anti-feature warnings, but also removes non-free trackers from apps? #FDroidUserSurvey

#FDroid 1.16-alpha0 is out. This is really big for us, because it will help us to get rid of some really complicated long-standing bugs. It's a big change and still needs a lot of testing to get ready, but we're getting there.

We want to add the official #Tor onion service for f-droid.org as an official mirror, so that clients will automatically use it. Please test by sharing the repo link to #FDroid client then add it as a mirror:
https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/issues/12#note_1184095205

This should prompt to add it as a mirror, which is safe since the keys need to match. Click cancel if it offers to add a new repo.

I was giving a computing ethics lecture about #FOSS and #antifeatures around 2014. Lots of folks there had never even heard of #FDroid. Maybe it's still not well-known?

F-Droid is a repository and platform for FOSS on Android. Their app can manage your other apps, much like you do with the Google Play Store.

When I need an Android app for something, I always check F-Droid first, just because the apps are trustworthy.

@fdroidorg

I'll reply with a few of my favorite apps on F-Droid... 🧵

In the over 3 weeks since #FDroid
shipped a big overhaul of the production buildserver, there have been updates published on most days: Nov16 Nov15 Nov14 Nov13 Nov11 Nov09 Nov08 Nov05 Nov01 Oct31 Oct30 Oct29 Oct28 Oct27 Oct26 Oct25 Oct24 Oct22 Oct21 Oct20

And now, even more exciting, is that this unlocked lots of low hanging fruit that can make the process run much faster.

#iodéOS is a privacy-enhanced fork of #LineageOS of the french company @iode that invests a lot of efforts in, e.g. stripping trackers and telemetry out of apps (like #firefox mobile).

They also maintain their own #fdroid repo w/ their apps to be used on other platforms.

BTW: On the #Fairphone 4, the #LOS19-based iodéOS3 is already available, while the official LOS is not.

Are there any other iodéOS3 users who can share experiences?

Updated version of Element now available on #fdroid \o/

Great news. One thing I would hope for, as a result of this incident: A fresh version on #fdroid

This is messed up.... Everyone use #fdroid
