The "search" field is magical: it can look up remote users or services, too!
For example one can follow a #writefreely #blog by searching for the "user" it's publishing on, like @globally-echoing-notes
It works because that service offers an AP compatible protocol.
@RPD0911 You can also "search" for complete URLs like "https://social.deadsuperhero.com/users/sean" and it will #webfinger the target and collect the #AP data, essentially "finding" the user or service in the URL.
@RPD0911 Fediverse uses "WebFinger" to access everything, so when you "search" it connects to the server and tries to get all service data from through WebFinger, and if it is able to interpret that it does that and present to you. Simple yet very effective.
