My partner is spending a few days in Toronto, Canada for a work conference where she flew yesterday, and I was curious about the alternatives to flying between the largest American metropolis and the capital city of Ontario for a direct distance of 350 miles (560 km):

  • Plane: in 5h door-to-door for $140-$330 + $150-$200 taxi round-trips at both ends.
  • Car: 470 miles (750 km) (+34%) in about 8h40mn for $100-$150 fuel (no tolls included)
  • Bus: in 12h05mn for $40-$140
  • Train: in 12h27mn for $75-$130

There's so much room for high speed rail improvement in this region.

Here's a really good, fast overview of the new #California roadmap for reaching #netzero #emissions by 2045.

It's by Dan Sperling, the founding director of the Institute of #Transportation Studies at #UCDavis. He also explains why California's moves on #climatechange reverberate around the world.

It wasn’t an accident. Cities and suburbs that prioritized cars over people, and designed exercise and activity out of daily life, were deliberately planned and built.

The better cities that are the solution will need to be deliberately planned and built too.

Unhealthy design did t just happen to us. We designed it.

“…a new study of early separated lane projects in the U.S. across six cities finds a rise of ridership between 21% and 171% after the lanes were installed.”

Never forget that when #Seoul, Korea removed the #Cheonggyecheon expressway in 2003 and replaced it with a restored stream and a 1000 acre park in the city’s centre, not only did it completely transform the city’s public life & economic success, but when combined with public transit improvements, the vehicle traffic congestion actually got better.

The traffic got BETTER!

Holy moly! @parismarx talking to @davidzipper on this week's #TechWontSaveUs is sure to be an excellent conversation. Two of my favorite #transportation folks talking about what needs to change in road transportation!

I like this trend of painting "unauthorized" crosswalks.

Cities almost always rush to erase them. That shows local agencies *can* move quickly to change streetscapes -- they just choose not to when residents request safety improvements. People should know that!
