My partner is spending a few days in Toronto, Canada for a work conference where she flew yesterday, and I was curious about the alternatives to flying between the largest American metropolis and the capital city of Ontario for a direct distance of 350 miles (560 km):

  • Plane: in 5h door-to-door for $140-$330 + $150-$200 taxi round-trips at both ends.
  • Car: 470 miles (750 km) (+34%) in about 8h40mn for $100-$150 fuel (no tolls included)
  • Bus: in 12h05mn for $40-$140
  • Train: in 12h27mn for $75-$130

There's so much room for high speed rail improvement in this region.

Map of the trip from New York City to Toronto by plane. The line is oblique, straight between the two cities. Map of the trip from New York City to Toronto by bus. The line is squiggly, weaving through the terrain, with a significant detour through Syracuse, directly East of Toronto.

Ok, because I'm that guy, and hopefully you don't mind me pointing it out, but I gotta ask: what's the capital of Canada?🙂
@Kinetix I don't know what you're talking about 👀

Heh, I just edited my post to talk about part of the airport link to Toronto there, but, uh, yeah... The capital of Canada is elsewhere. 😁

At least you didn't South Park it and say she was heading to downtown Canada.

@Kinetix Thanks, I updated my estimate for taxi fares. It is about US $60 one-way to the JFK airport from where we are in Brooklyn.
Serious problem with train, in North America...

Not to be That Guy, but our capital is Ottawa, Ontario.

Toronto is the capital of the province, and our largest city, but not our national capital.

@acroamatis It's okay, you just are the third That Guy in this thread, and I edited the original post after the first remark, but sadly the edit doesn't seem to federate for boosts. 🥲
By what measure is NYC the 3rd largest?

@Brian Ó I wrongly assumed it was being Los Angeles and Washington for some reason. 😵‍💫

This post isn't my best work fact-wise.
