Tomorrow Moscow closes seven central subway stations in anticipation of "illegal" protests. Also parts of city centre will be blocked for pedestrian access and surface transit will be diverted. Cafes and malls in the area will be shut down. Various government agencies keep warning that anyone joining protest action will be considered participating in public disorder.

Interesting day is coming...

@V. T. Eric Layton - I will certainly try :)

@BR 549 ☎ - as these protests are "unauthorized" and chaotic it is hard to get exact numbers. Also sources interpret same estimates completely differently - opponents always downplay them as numbers themselves aren't very large ("it is not even 0.1% of city population!" kind of rethoric) and proponents say they are still the largest protests in the last decade or so.

Note that anyone participating has real risk of arrest and getting massive fine for just being there. Gets worse if you do anything. Many people can't afford these risks.
Being illegal, makes it hard to judge. They have balls of steel for attempts alone. Hope they can fix whaytever is going on and stop protesting from being illegal.
@Thew Raslletem Not without regime change it seems.

So far protests of any kind are getting more illegal each year.

This isn't good of course as stifling protests doesn't make problems go away. If people can't express themselves peacefully then at some point it will blow up.
@BR 549 ☎ I certainly would prefer other means of getting voices heard. The problem is that rational discussion is being made almost impossible these days.

As for Navalny himself... I don't think everyone who attends protests unquestionably supports him. In fact quite many consider him shady (or just not nice) person. However he can attract big crowds and if some people don't see him as their leader (some even consider him government agent) still these events can be used to gain some momentum towards change. At this point it is almost like any change would be welcome.
From the reports, Russian police have dealt with public disorder in a professional way. One hopes these gatherings don't contribute to virus-related fatalities and that the court process will proceed swiftly.
There was no public disorder.

"Public disorder means such substantial interference with the public peace as to constitute a significant threat to the health and safety of the people or a significant threat to public or private property. The term includes insurrection, rioting, looting, and persistent violent civil disobedience."

But yes, I am sure courts will have no problem finding some.

There are some charges of "obstructing transportation" as some people stepped off sidewalks and such.

not just a day. it's the time. the zeitgeist. if you look from a distance, it's not just a local attack on human rights, it's a raise of fascists tendencies all over the world. and in this country the situation is very close to 1905, historically.
love will win, for sure! <3
