Kinda wondering why downvotes aren't a thing on #Mastodon.

Part of the problem of social media is the algorithm factor. If the Internet is the great "town square" (Twitter is not, as its literally OWNED by a private person) then people should be able to UNlike content in order to guide the discourse.

Am I wrong?

@JimboFett Downvotes are used to order topics in forum-like software (like Reddit, StackOverflow). Downvotes on Mastodon would have no effect since timeline order is chronological by follows. Maybe on local/global timelines but it seems ineffective given the speed at which a post disappear from these pages.
