Maybe non-systemd distros will have to drop support for Gnome? The Gnome developers have long been known to be "questionable" when it comes to the Free Software movement anyway.

@Tom Grzybow Linux Mint to the rescue me thinks, they've already been working to create alternative apps not tied so tightly to Gnome from what I understand.

I don't see a Linux Mint version with Gnome. I also don't see an MX Linux version with Gnome.

@David Not officially, Mint is the team behind Cinnamon, and like the Xfce and Mate teams, they're starting to run into problems with GTK software being tied tightly together, so they've started by forking Libadwaita, and I seem to remember hearing that they've forked at least one other program because of the problem.

Mint has developed some of its own software, as has MATE. I don't think it's motivated by anything to do with systemd.

E.g., I use Pluma, developed by MATE. I uninstalled Xed, developed by Mint. Until I got rid of it in favor of Pluma, Xed was the default text editor. Mint developed a couple of other X-something applications which I also replaced with their MATE equivalents.

I use the MATE version of Linux Mint.

Some people think it's a terrible idea to run software designed to run on one DE on a different DE. I do it all the time. I always have. E.g., I use Kate for developing software.

Gnome is my least favorite DE. I only use it with Tails because there is no other choice. I use MATE as my "daily driver," but I also like XFCE and Cinnamon. I'm happy with Mint's decision to support the 3 DEs it does.

@David Nope, nothing to do with systemd, however a lot of what they're working on now has to do with other Gnome decisions, so I expect this'll lead to an expansion.

@Tom Grzybow And GTK, GTK2 and GTK3 apps are all pretty freestanding, but GTK40 has been tying the whole Gnome system together tighter and tighter, which obviously becomes a problem, the systemd thing is just the icing on the cake.

That said, KDE applications run under AntiX seem to need a lot of β€œhelp”.

I believe that applications should compile-in all necessary dependencies.

Desktops and libraries are always a moving target. Why not try to minimize that?
