Is the 500 characters limit arbitrary? I see extreme large :mastodon: posts recently and was wondering...
@smpl is there any reason not to raise it on my server to anything else? Does it break clients? Or does it cause stress to people?
there's a "load more" button that gets added. Deciding to click it or not can cause some people distress. Is it going to be good? Am I going to waste a precious 5 seconds of my life that I could be watching cat videos? FOMO? That's stress, maybe back it down to 300 words, keep that load more button from threatening people... Also I have a Friendica account, and NO text limit that I know of
@Xantulon Sometimes even I can't tell whether I'm joking. Mastodon is a network full of extremely sensitive yet pretty assertive people. Often feels pretty one-sided. Not a problem, just an observation.
I don't mean to offend anyone, and that was intended as humor. It's just impossible to please everyone all the time
I am a well-known instance of those persons who use way too many words to describe concepts which could be compressed into 140 characters. Sometimes I feel that communication works better if I try to make it as precise and hard to misunderstand as possible, instead of shortening it to the size of a poppy seed and hope that people will read what I have meant to write.

But I know all well for a real long time now that twitter was not made for me and I do not happen to be in the target audience of short messaging, not for SMS and not for 500 character limited Mastodon. In fact I already had at least 3 posts in the last few days that was within 10 characters of the maximum 500, and had to trim or replace words just to be able to cram into the textbox what I wanted to say.

All that being said I also happen to have a friendica account, which you are just observing, and I deliberately try to break all the pissible, I mean, possible limits of that 500 characters.

This comment whall be around the double in size. Let's see what mastodon can make of it. :-)
@Xantulon You are expected to please everyone. 😉
@grin@fika.grin.hu I clicked it, I clicked the button. And it felt good 😃

@grin
and that is why I'm so often displeased (not really, but it sounds very deep and philosophical and stuff)
@Xantulon yesterday a guy blocked me because I disagreed with him. He told me that he done that to prevent off-topic discussion. Of course the discussion had 3 members.
I'm reading a multi-thread post right now, and I'm thinking it would have been nice to have had a Read more button

well... probably not worth being in that discussion anyway. Sad really
In fact it was a weird one. Involved Ms. Thunberg and her topics, which usually attract both very interesting and good people as well as complete lunatics, fanatics and zealots. Unfortunately it is very hard to argue with a fanatic. And in the same thread there was a guy on the same side as the lunatic one and have discussed our disagreement nicely and empathically. So indeed, the guy wasn't missed.
Interesting fact: #friendica cannot pull individual posts, it only pulls the actor's page.
@grin@fika.grin.hu fanatics are always awkward. I also think there's some serious, and probably diagnosable, trauma driving it. I try to back away as gracefully as possible. Some say that's avoidance, I say it's because I'm not a psychologist and I have no business feeding trauma I don't understand
@grin
@grin@fika.grin.hu really. I've not gotten into the nuts and bolts of Friendica, just no time... when I get moments, I'll poke around and see what squirms, but it's not that often
@grin
@Xantulon@grin@fika.grin.hu it's php, so I keep a respectful amount of distance. 😦
@grin@fika.grin.hu Yes, protective gear zone. I'm like that with javascript. I look at it and my eyes start itching and watering
@grin
@grin@fika.grin.hu@Xantulon Yup had a Read More button too. For some reason when I clicked it as well as expanding the post it seemed to increase the font size, using the web interface.
@jacksonchen666
I realised that #Friendica can handle arbitrary length so I'm using it whenever I want to be verbose.
