@grin
But those weren't said. The chown I've mentioned could completely ruin a system without actually deleting anything. But this shall not come as a newsflash for people using admin/root accounts.
And `rm -fr /` won't do anything when you're logged in as n0r. (Yes, I do know that you know, just felt like it had to be said.)
@grin@fika.grin.hu@grin@mastodon.grin.hu

Uh, @neil did not specify any particular rm command? This thread started with "rm-related jokes" (meaning any rm recommandation intending to harm the naive Linux beginner), not "rm -fr /" specifically.
@n0r@grin@fika.grin.hu Neil did not specify the command you have mentioned. Please do not reinterpret what I am saying, I like the original meaning more.
@grin @n0r
@grin@mastodon.grin.hu@grin@fika.grin.hu The request was "not any rm-jokes". You said "won't work anyways because of protection". I gave you a counterexample which would indeed work. You then proceed to change the topic from the ~ variant to the / variant as if that was all the discussion was about all along. It wasn't.
@n0r@grin@fika.grin.hu You didn't, actually. You showed an example that on a root prompt it is possible to cause harm (by using a different command). Why do you believe that any of us need your examples of possible harm caused by commands in a root prompt? Why do you think this would help any arguments? Apart from "don't use root unless you need it", and "use your brain"?
@grin @n0r
@grin@mastodon.grin.hu@grin@fika.grin.hu Yes I did. You don't need root for 'rm -rf ~' to wipe your home directory.
@grin@fika.grin.hu@grin@mastodon.grin.hu Also said "all or part of their system". Yes, I'd consider ~ part of the system.
@n0r@grin@fika.grin.hu Let's disagree then. I believe people typing in random jokes into the command line as root cannot be helped the way you suggest, and I accept that you think otherwise. ☮️
@grin @n0r
@n0r@grin@fika.grin.hu Indeed: I do not believe that anyone wrote with the intention of people actually typing it in. Nor do I think anyone with some basic level of understanding would type in random toots as root. Since I read these with these beliefs I only have seen the humour aspects of them.
As a sidenote: people are telling these jokes since the early 90s on irc, and possibly even before that, and surprisingly few instances were known where they have caused actual harm.
@grin @n0r
@grin@mastodon.grin.hu@grin@fika.grin.hu You don't need root to accidentaly rm all your personal files by not getting an rm joke.
@n0r@grin@fika.grin.hu Okay. Thanks for sharing.
@grin @n0r
@grin@mastodon.grin.hu@grin@fika.grin.hu To be precise: The directory /home/n0r remains and gives an error. But all its contents are gone. Yes, I just tried it myself in an environment where I don't loose anything valuable.
@grin@mastodon.grin.hu@grin@fika.grin.hu Fully agree. Joke with people who get it all you want, but give people who genuinly need help genuine help. (Hope I didn't mess up my english)
