Can I have #mastodon offer me multiple languages for my posts, instead of having to search for them every time?
Or let's punish people speaking more than one language? 😉
and I notice a lot of whatever #language posts tagged as "english", which suggests a serious interface flaw in #mastodon and possibly also in the clients.
It’s based on what people choose as their language on their account itself, which isn’t an option you choose at sign up so if you’re in a mostly English instance, but speak Spanish, it will still be marked as English because the default means your account is marked as English since most people won’t bother to change it.
@LibreNyaa Maybe also that, but the main problem is that it seems impossible to set multiple spoken languages, so I could choose when I post. Right now I have to search for my other languages (primary actually, since English is my secondary language) if I don't forget about it. Or delete/repost if I notice fast enough. That's bad.
@tardis it's all depend on what the people designing it want for themselves. It is slightly better than designing for profit maximalisation but not much, since it is not "user oriented", it is "developer oriented". And mastodon seems to have full of design decisions based on private agendas. But it's okay, that's such a system.
@tardis well the world has that funny habit, changing all the time. I've already seen a lot, from the modems in 1988 through the decades and the internet and whatnot, still, it's just people communcating. The "social" network is as good as the people.
Probably a rural Bluegarian 😁 village is back by a few decades, but even them cannot stay there forever.
@tardis Не можете да спрете света, който чука на вратата ви. 😉
@tardis I was lazy to criss-cross translate it, still, curiously close to russian. I know very little about Bluegarian language, maybe I should check someday! 🙂
@tardis nono it is Bluegarian! I realised that now. Are you a bul tardis? No! You see? 😁
@tardis About slavic languages: that's interesting. I always thought people are satisfied to hear similar languages, but now that you say, I can imagine them as "speaking our perfect language horribly wrong". 🙂
You know that Hungarian have no relatives around, or, in fact, almost anywhere. Everyone speaks alien.
In my very personal opinion the russian language itself is not bad, sounds okay, the problem is sometimes just the people speaking it. 😉
@tardis well, Hungarian [Finnugric], Basque, Navajo [Athabaskan] are good examples. 🙂
In fact Basque is probably the language isolate with the largest speaker base.

But... unique may mean something else. Chinese is unique for its tonal system, or any in the https://blog.pimsleur.com/2020/09/29/worlds-most-unusual-languages/ list. I doubt you'll find many material to study of those, though. 😁
@tardis Funny, but Hungarian is said to be somewhat similar to Bulgarian (as for agglutination):

@tardis I tried to find some Bulgarian speech samples and it is indeed very different sounding.
@tardis we Europeans are so much better! (At this, at least. Having a lot of languages helps to understand better foreign peoples.)
@tardis Hungarian is using tonal matching and transofmration a lot and I guess this makes it sound nice.
@tardis whatever the reason it sounds good to prove it's of no use. 😉
