The upsides of self hosting:
AWS was down - my server worked.
Azure was down - my server still worked.
Cloudflare was down - my server didn't care.
Hetzner was down - my server was still chugging along.
The downside of self hosting:
Two years ago, after 12 years of 24/7 operation, the motherboard died. The server was down for months, because it was a 1000km drive to get to it...

The reasons I'm going to limit my involvement in communities is because _every_ _single_ _one_ of them is on a different stupid chat/messaging service.
Discord. Skype. Facebook, WhatsApp, Viber, Telegram. Signal. Slack, Matrix, IRC... And almost all of them (minus IRC) has this horrid electron based desktop client. Just my chat clients running eat up a very significant portion of a 16GB RAM laptop... It's ridiculous and sad.
Just send me an email, please. There, I said it.
