The braking system dates back to civil war times. The unions lobbied for the train company to upgrade to newer systems brought in in the 90's.
But...profits. The train company said it couldn't afford the upgrades. Despite shareholder's profits being through the roof.
Even the Obama administration sided with the owners, not the unions.
If this sounds familiar, it's because it is. This could happen in the UK. Because privately owned companies value profit over safety. It's what the RMT are currently fighting for.
