Photo of part of a leaf from a medieval manuscript: folio i recto in British Library, Additional manuscript 88974. The leaf, a recycled page from a roll of accounts, bears two dozen lines of Latin text copied in dark brown ink, laid out in several staggered columns of varying width and height. The parchment on which the text is copied is in poor condition: discoloured and crumpled, with ink worn away in places, and marked by several deep folds, a small tear, and regions of pronounced grain patterning visible as patches of slightly darker stippling. The infelicities create a strange beauty.
