Friendica quotes are not correctly displayed in Mastodon

I recently commented on a mastodon "toot". My comment had a bbcode quote tag in it. It is displayed correctly in Friendica, but not in Mastodon. I'm using Friendica 2019.12.

Is this an issue in Friendica that can be easily fixed?

I thought Mastodon woult at least support markdown quotes. I will try to keep this in mind when commenting on Mastodon posts.
