People always talk about pleroma groups, but what is that feature and how exactly is it supposed to work?

I'm genuinely interested, I know its kind of a meme.
literally everybody has a different idea of what they "did" and what they should "do" it's honestly just kind of a meme
basically the end all be all solution for federation problems
the ideal way to find people who share your interests
an ultimate, most optimal, ideal method of communicating with soon-to-be friends and an ideally moderated, spam free system of discussing all your favourite topics with people who are also either in the know or desire to know more.
so like private timelines?
but federated and voluntary-opt-in-out
as far as i undferstood it (not a professionaΓΆΒ΄l) it basically was just "i opt myself into #gamedev" and get to read all posts with thta hashtag or something on the home timeline, and others get to write my #gamedev posts

except its in a fancy separate container that doesnt directly involve hashtags

basically twitter hashtags but more complex/harder to use

someone might murder me for this take
y'all make it sound so complicated.
it's just extra global timelines filtered by tags you can subscribe to. surely that's easier to wrap your heads around than your first intro to the home/local/global feeds on fedi.
"You see that bro? He called you a nerd!"
