Sometimes I wonder how much my #mastodon experience differs from that of people on other #fediverse instances.

For example, I see a lot of toots about the presence of racism, sexism, transphobia, techbros etc. on Mastodon, but at the same time I hardly ever experience those things myself. That's not to say that these don't exist, just that I don't often come across it. The fediverse is a big place, maybe experiences differ per server. Idk, am I just lucky to have found a chill Mastodon bubble?

I assume it's part of how you built your bubble.

Not sticking your neck out helps a lot too.

Some people out there are simply "on a path". Their whole life seems to resolve around a certain topic and they start to see it _everywhere_. It shows in their timeline.

I mean it's called echo chamber for a reason. You keep an open mind and get all kinds of stories. 😀

To be fair, it most probably is everywhere. It's systemic for a reason. It is the same situation for me on Twitter, I only see racist, sexist and transphobic content because the people I follow point at it. Otherwise I almost wouldn't be aware about it firsthand.

I have unfollowed people because they've posted an egregious example of sexism even if we were agreeing on many other topics related to discrimination.

Like you say, some people curate their social media sphere not to be exposed to this content, some others are actively looking for it to combat it, and some people are just exposed to it through replies to their content.
