!Friendica Support I am confused as to how posting to someone else's feed works. I will post using the ! to a forum of mine and its 50/50 on whether it shows up or not. Lately it hasn't been doing it at all Am I doing it wrong?

Friendica Support reshared this.

OK, this explains a few never received emails.

I have tried the @ many time,s and it usually does not work.

How can I send a message(not a post to the whole fediverse) to a user then if @utzer does not work?

Thanks
@Joseph Hogan the mentions work, so @ will cause a mention to the user and delivery to all your followers. A forum also receives the mention, but earlier this did not mean that the forum delivers the posts to all its followers. So the ! was introduced in Friendica, it was there in other systems already before that.

@Anubis2814
I asked if it always worked, because after the hackathon I had questions for @Tobias
I posted them to my feed, but never got a reply.

I tried sending via my friendica email using his full address. It never worked because friendica did not accept the email address.

Id email only for people you follow or who follow you?

Yes, the @ mention always worked. Some reasons can be that Tobias was just too busy. With the mention now he will receive a message for every reply in the thread.
That must be it. At least I am doing it right!

I needed help on the wiki, but when @vinvz(sp???) added the GUI editor, I was able to ask my question.
@Joseph Hogan I added the editor. :-P

That is why you hijacked the thread there...

Maybe a mention also doesn't work if you mention a person in a post that is restricted and the person is not in the list of those who can see the post. I almost never post restricted, so I am not sure.
Sorry, @utzer added the editor, sorry for the slip of the neuron there:( I apologize.

What is a restricted person? I have not heard this concept yet.
@Joseph Hogan restricted post, not person. It is called "Visibility" it seems, but it is in fact a restriction. See in https://social.mmaj.ca/compose
@utzer so there is a way to make a "private" email to someone. Using this Limited/Private feature, you can restrict it to only those you choose, if I understand it correctly.

I noticed in your image you have the option for posting to twitter and tumbler. How is this done? Mine does not have this. Are there setting to modify? Are there other sites to which one can post via this public option?
@Joseph Hogan yes, there is other sites you can post to. Quite a few actually. You have to look in the addons. I think Twitter got complicated since the closed the API more and more.

Friendica addons is the thing you want to look into.

You mean the messages in Friendica? It is not email (also we call it handle), it is just messages from Friendica to Friendica.
Id email only for people you follow or who follow you?
I think for the message you have to follow the person and the person has to follow you. But the selection of the "handle" is not a free text, you enter a name and it will suggest possible handles to send messages to.
@utzer

Yes, friendica to friendica. Then, it must be only people I follow or who follows me.

Now I know! Thanks:)
I think that there should be a way to email someone with in the fediverse. The whole exchange of posts is all set up. Setting up email should be the next step, so that commucation would be handled with in the fediverse.
@joe
It would be a nice feature. But, IMHO, it would have to be set up with some form of encryption.
@Joseph Hogan you can sent a post and restrict it to the one person. I guess we will see chat functions in Mastodon at some point. There is a XMPP integration for Friendica.
Not sure if email like conversations would be a benefit for me.
@utzer
Yes, you can do that. But admins will be able to read them. At least in Mastodon they will. And I wouldn't want any admin of any system on Earth to read my private conversations with friends and family.

The email client is already set up in Friendica(at least it looks like email. COuld that be used?

The other similar idea is to have some type fo chat program form with in Freindica/fediverse that allows a simple way of communicating through out the fediverse.

Similar to Facebook and LinkedIn.
From what I hear they are working on incorporating a chat client but it may take a few upgrades
@Anubis2814 This would be pretty cool. Is this a Friendica only chat client, or are there plans to one day(in the distant future) to allow chat with in the fediverse?
Friendica only for now, no idea about the rest of the fediverse. They may have to incorporate the client into their software too
@Anubis2814 usually #Mastodon will reinvent everything in a slightly incompatible way. :-P
Now, imagine the fediverse works together and makes a decent chat program compatible across all platforms (assuming it is incorporated by each platform). It would be a force to be reckoned with. The Fediverse is slowly growing, but with this added tool, an attraction value.

But then, it does not have to be one single app. IT can be a framework like Matrix(If I understand it correctly). That way, each platform develops an app(or more that one if enough developers jump on board). using the agreed upon framework for exchange. Kind of like how the fediverse works for posts an other exchanges, why not a chat app?
Andstatus is mostly a universal app though I think there should be some form of webview option in there so we can see the webview of our site instead of the timeline if we want. I just use my friendica "pin to home" webview on my phone. Trying to explain it to the creator of the app and he is a bit confused, so used to thinking of the old fediverse where sites themselves weren't fun to use.
@Joseph Hogan I am not a fan of reinventing the wheel and in this case we have pretty good messengers around. There is XMPP the old but still well working messaging system. And there is Matrix / Riot which is kind of new but already very pretty successful it seems. Both can be used with encryption.

If Friendica adds a messenger it does not mean any other platform will add the same system.

I am not sure what is going on with other platforms, not sure if there are any plans to add messaging in #Pleroma or #Mastodon.

I think in the long run they will add messaging, as it is a key feature of any social network.

But at the same time a integration of some other existing system, maybe Matrix, would be enough. But then people would have to get an account separately.
@Roland Häder I know, I never tried that. Never felt the need to.
