So, we talk a lot about how Mastodon is different from Twitter, and I generally agree - but, I wonder if the difference isn't as much about the number of people, and the fact that we're already self selected to be the sort of people who would choose to use Mastodon instead of Twitter, given the choice. If that were true, then twitter going down could make Mastodon a lot more like Twitter, simply because of all the extra users who would no longer have the choice to use Twitter instead... :/
@Angle I do not share your worry. Most of the #Twitter experience is summed up by having access to all the people all the time, and this was only possible because of the centralized nature of the platform. You simply can't recreate the same paradigm on the #Fediverse for network structure reasons. Not even on mastodon.social that now gets routinely defederated, cutting into the access some people crave.
why do you need a centralised platform? Email/phones are not centralised and I can email or call anyone I like anytime.
@RadiantFlux This isn't true, you can't call me or email me right now even though I'm using both services. On the other hand, Twitter is giving anyone on the service immediate access to anyone else using the service.
