•I know people who do not "federate" with Gmail, meaning they don't write to Gmail Addresses.
What's more interesting (IMHO) is, what happens when you try to send mails to Gmail from a small mailserver - turns out, that is unreliable at best, but mostly does not work at all, because Google is killing open protocols and denys "federation" with you.
The same happened with xmpp, and we will see how the turnout for Activitypub will be.
