Why has the public consciousness become extra enamored with UFOs lately? And why is congress seemingly wasting its time talking about them lately?

Is it because the world feels exceptionally shitty, more and more often, to most?

A culture-wide increase in magical thinking coupled with a distrust of traditional institutions and science?

Has anyone done good skeptical analysis on this lately?

Honestly, I am kind of the Carl Sagan school of thought on this matter. Life in other parts of the universe and even our galaxy is possible and maybe even likely.

But there isn't a lot of reason to believe UFO reporting, either.

(Again, no replies from true believers today, thanks.)
as a former (albeit in early adolescence) true believer with a bit of a history of family stories around the idea of UFOs, and thus a lingering twinge of the fox-mulder-style-i-want-to-believe somewhere in my psychological makeup, i think i get it.

it's a longing for something _more_, something unbounded by the currently known parameters of our undeniably shitty world. something electric and fluid where the known state of things is a kind of grim certainty.
