is your keyboard raised on a little platform? i can't quite tell.
@kate It's a very cool piece of hardware, the universal Cintweak keyboard trays: https://cintweak.com/ , a life changer for keyboard shortcuts ๐Ÿ‘ .
@kate
great, i'll check it out! thanks ๐Ÿ˜
(i'm trying to figure out a set up that lets me switch easily between drawing and typing, thus my particular interest there)
@kate On this setup, I type with the two forearms on the XpPenArtistPro24 display. It's 'ok' because it's not a super hot display tablet; but not 100% ideal. Still, I managed recently to make big morning of writing or code for the website in this position. When I have to do more keyboard intensive task for the full day; I just detach the keyboard, and push the display under the top one (and close it). Not ideal again, but so far, it works.
@kate
@kate
Wouldn't your tablet have the function to turn into a keyboard to type?
@kate

@NeadReport No, it's not a tablet with touch support, only stylus. ๐Ÿ™‚ And maybe it's a good thing because I'm not really liking the touch keyboards in general: I'm slow with them, miss click a lot on keys. I still feel them to be a good workaround on small pad/tablet or phone; but I wouldn't edit an article with a keyboard like that or code a new page for my website with that.

@kate

@NeadReport yeah, same essentially. Also I've never met an on screen keyboard layout that can handle heavy markdown usage, much less coding.
beautiful drawing ๐Ÿ˜

@leah ๐Ÿ˜Š Thank you!

I upload the full resolution here: https://www.peppercarrot.com/0_sources/0ther/misc/hi-res/2023-09-14_Random-Portrait_by-David-Revoy.jpg

I've considered buying that scanner (well, a slightly different model I think). I will consider this a Seal of Approval
@ElDeadKennedy It's a solid scanner. I think I have it since.... mmm... 2016? It's a Canon, Inc. CanoScan LiDE 220. Super precise and can be calibrated with a color target. Plug and play on all Linux scanner software so far.
Very nice workspace setup, indeed.๐Ÿ˜ƒ
cute! what's the yellow pad on the bottom right?
I think that's an 8bitdo controller, but that's more like bottom center
@ElDeadKennedy @kaia Yes, you are right. It's a "8bitdo zero 2" https://www.8bitdo.com/zero2/ gamepad. It has multiple mode (keyboard, switch, xbox, generic gamepad). Bluetooth on Linux catch the keyboard mode, and the generic gamepad.
I could grab the event on Linux with evtest, while in keyboard mode. So, I remapped the keys with this method https://www.davidrevoy.com/article989/how-to-customise-a-usb-numeric-keypad-under-gnulinux , it's a good little pad to get on my other hand while drawing, especially when I'm taking weird position ๐Ÿ˜…
sounds useful, thank you!!
@kaia @ElDeadKennedy Yes, good little device. I'm happy about it. The battery is good enough to paint during 3 or 4 days, and it charges in two or three hour with a micro usb cable. It goes 'sleep' after three minute i think, but start button reconnect it almost immediately. So, it is useful.
@Xalofar I couldn't resist but picking one last time I went to Ikea.
where is the thinkpad ๐Ÿง
@portugalense In my backpack , it's my travel machine. It doesn't has enough power to make a Pepper&Carrot comic page or compiling an episode, but today I took it to Toulouse library and made a conf with it. Good little laptop.
i agree, good little laptop ๐Ÿ˜€
i was the one to ask for fingerprint some time ago ๐Ÿ˜€
@portugalense ๐Ÿ˜ฎ oh right, my bad for not recognising you. Have you managed to get the fingerprint functional, btw?
me lazy , so no i haven't tried the thing the other person sent :blob_cry:
@portugalense ๐Ÿ˜† hehe, no problem and I understand totally ๐Ÿ˜‰
How do you like those Sennheiser cans? Model?
@NeadReport It's the Sennheiser HD 599 , I took it in July because I had to change my very old one (even if I DIY a lot, but it was 10 years old and started to bug hard ๐Ÿ˜†). This one was praised in the reviews. I disliked it a lot at first opening: I was probably too used to listen to my music with my previous headphones. Bass/Treble changed and I wasn't used to it. Another con: when listening loudly, the room around can hear your music a bit. With time, I adapted to it but, yep, a bit meh.
Having lived through so much computing itโ€™s a amazing the things we have today. That tablet is so futuristic and what can be done is mind blowing.
@breadbin Oh yes, especially compared to 20 years ago when flat panel were still super expensive. I remember my first Cintiq 12wx, with 1280x800px for 12 inch, super dark. Then my bulky super expensive 21UX. This large 24 inch has quad HD resolution (2560x1440px) and is not that thick. It makes me wonder how will look my desk in 20 years from now ๐Ÿ™‚
@breadbin โ€œDesk? Where weโ€™re going, we donโ€™t need desks.โ€
Well, actually, I believe we will, for arm support if nothing else. And a stylus is better than trying to finger paint with virtual tools, as is a real keyboard for typing. But a lot of the other stuff will probably be replaced by unobtrusive AR gear.

I remember trying to paint something (very unsuccessfully I might add, Iโ€™m no artist) using a joystick on a C64๐Ÿ˜€

Who knows if the future breakthroughs will be hardware, software, or something else. ๐Ÿ˜€

Nice headphones! I mean sharkphones.
it's so beautiful! Sorry abaut my english, i speak spanish.
Doing some bedtime reading with Hilda, Greta, Wally, and Sauron ๐Ÿ˜€
My plushies gathering around the tablet for some bedtime reading :)
@avesbury_rosetta Haha, ๐Ÿ˜† Good name for your lamp "sauron". Perfect! ๐Ÿ‘
oh no the lamp isn't sauron, the dinosaur is c:
Baby Shark tutududu ๐Ÿ˜๐ŸŽต
@Splig Oh nice! I'll probably try to put one at vertical too, it looks great on your setup when you watch a video that use only a portion of that vertical screen. ๐Ÿ‘
How do you draw with fins? ๐Ÿค”
@Shepard ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ ๐Ÿคฃ
Nice setup! Does monitor calibration work in Wayland now, or are you still on X11?
Hi! Wayland is far to be ready for my workflow, color calibration might be soon for next 6 month or 1 year (in progress?) but many features are still missing. Wayland can't even calibrate the cursor under the pen tip (to avoid parralax) on this tablet, so not possible for me to make art under Wayland right now. ๐Ÿ˜”

โ€œcalibrate the cursor under the pen tip (to avoid parralax)โ€

I didnโ€™t realize artists did this, that only helps as long as youโ€™re using your tablet from one angle right? If you were to adjust the angle of your tablet youโ€™d need to recalibrate this?

@ademan Yes, sort of. It solve the parralax for a single position, so if the position changes too much, it's good to recalibrate.

@kvaks

Does Sharky do something besides of wearing headphones?
I showed your picture to my daughter (10yo) and she was amazed. I asked her if she wanted to send you a message and she said: "I LOVE his style". You do really have an amazing style!
@brunofontes Thanks her a lot for that! :blobcatheart: (and thanks for showing her, and relaying the feedback)
What tablet do you use? How well does it work? I wanna get into using krita (mind you I suck at drawing, but wanna learn) but I only have a drawing pad without screen and I find it very difficult to use.
@raccoon Hey, this one is the XPPen 24 Artist Pro, with a modified overlay sheet from Photodon, it works with a partial but good enough support on Linux/X11 and with Krita appimage. Check my blog, 'hardware' button on the top, it will list my review and the update I wrote about it. I'll also test a new tablet next month, a 16 inch from XPpen.
So I watched one of the videos, it seems pretty nice.
Also your art is absolutely lovely, I find it very charming ๐Ÿ˜€ And you seem like a very nice bloke.
@raccoon Thanks! Good luck in your research. You can also check Krita-artists forum: you'll find a lot of feedback about hardware on it if you ask about what could fit your setup, operating system and budget.
@nico Yes, I am, but i disliked a lot the default overlay sheet, the one i got from Photodon (i explain the model in a video on my channel) really enhanced a lot the device. Also, the keyboard tray (Cintweak) fixed the ergonomy issue, or most of it.
what is this yellow remote control at the bottom of the picture ?
@davidou Hey, it's a https://www.8bitdo.com/zero/ gamepad; this one has a 'keyboard mode' where the pad returns random letters. I kept this mode and customised it with this method https://www.davidrevoy.com/article989/how-to-customise-a-usb-numeric-keypad-under-gnulinux , so now it's a wireless shortcut remote while I draw. It's ok, a bit tiny for my big hands, and it also loose battery after 3 full days of painting. But it charge quickly, and pressing start it connect to bluetooth quickly too. So, it is still convenient.

Hello David !

Since you like to test hardware on Linux, here's an artist using an ASUS tablet. IN case you manage to make ASUS to send you one for testing.

Best

@mhunt Hey, thanks for the link! (at 1:42; while drawing the eyes, big display lag) Oh, I'm pretty sure I'll have them on my email soon. The tricky part is always when I tell them I want to test without the proprietary driver and on Linux. That's where most disapear or don't reply ๐Ÿ˜‚ We'll see!
I think I heard in the video that it doesn't has a specific driver. But if you do get one for review, you'll know. Have fun then.
