Fun fact, in Hungarian.

Ground Floor - Föld (ground) szint (level)
First floor - Első (first) emelet ("something made elevated")
Second floor - Második (second) emelet ("s.m.e")
etc.

So, when you think about "something made elevated" cannot be the ground floor, because that is not elevated at all. Bamm, logic.

Twist: there are cases when the "ground floor" is a bit elevated, but not a full level (e.g. few stairs required to reach), we say magasföldszint ("high ground level").
