David, Thank you for everything you've done and for giving us time to migrate and access to our data in the meantime. Diasp.org will indescribably missed.

Thank you for keeping diasp.org going for 15 years, David -- that's a long time!

Do people have suggestions for good alternatives?

Do people have suggestions for good alternatives?

Many of us from here are already on Bluesky: https://bsky.app/

Bluesky is an awkward alternative. It is microblogging for one, and two it's extremely big/crowded/noisy.
diaspora-fr.org is open for new sign-ups.
Thank you for providing a home for people displaced from Pluspora from Google+.
I guess ActivityPub wins the Fediverse, see folks over on Mastodon..
Thanks for the work you have done @David. I have other places to contact people but I will miss having the space.

Thank you, David, for providing this online home for so long. Sad to hear it's got to end.

It's a big question what to do next. D* is shrinking. I like Friendica, but it's been really unreliable. Mastodon is restrictive with a lot of features I don't like.

Link to join diaspora-fr.org if interested...
Cheers, @David! It's been a good run, thanks for giving us all a home for so many years. Kinda felt like the Island of Misfit Toys, and I mean that as a compliment 😀 Hoping to find a new D* home, but I'm also on Mastodon, would love to connect with y'all if you're in the neighborhood. Ever onwards! 😀 https://mastodon.social/@7sleepersmusic
@Art X make sure you review their terms https://diaspora-fr.org/terms or of any pod you move to!
Thank You David , it's been great time ..it's unbelievable time runs so fast 😀
Thank you David! Like many others, I came from G+, Pluspora, now Diasp. Nothing lasts forever, though sometimes we may wish it. You've helped create a community that has helped many stay in touch, and connect with each other. No small thing!

What others said. Cannot "like" as I feel like the Google Plus train is rolling over me/us again.
Different of course, with personal attention and finances involved. For now, thank you @David

Going forward, a big concern is: What will remain of images tagged/displayed "here"? And of course, how to stay connected to long-time friends/family/acquaintances "here". Diaspora social? Some posts seem to suggest all of diaspora* is going down, but I've not seen that stated (yet?). Anyway, best of luck "here" - where I hope to remain, I guess another pod. 🙁

Just to be clear here, only diasp.org is shutting down, the rest of the Diaspora network will continue in operation.
Wow! So sad. :`( I just started using it as a daily family blog. Thank you @David for all your work keeping the best Diaspora pod up and running.

I call that pod-hopping (or timewarping)
one of the charmes of the idea of decentralisation

Came here from joindiaspora, in the early days 😀
David's post gives a lot of did for thought about Diaspora and the Fediverse. All I know is that I will always remain in the fediverse, or whatever project embodied the ideals of free, decentralized and cooperative social networking.
I'm also on Mastodon and Mbin, I'll post links to those in my stream later.
As for Diaspora, I don't want to choose a pod lightly. I'm going to do some research, starting by:
https://www.geekpedia.com/building-a-linux-server-a-comprehensive-step-by-step-guide/
Although I'll most likely join someone else's server. Still, this has taught me I want to learn more about hosting.
See you all around

Thank you for this time!

I began at diasp.net, just a little over ten years ago. That pod no longer is.
I got accounts on other pods, including diasp.org, initially for federation purposes but when diasp.net disappeared I moved.
Fingers crossed that diasp.eu, where I have my "@present main account" now, will stay up for a bit longer. /♇ ✱ [phle]

Sorry, my comment above contains a statistical error. Diasp.org currently accounts for 12% of the active users on D* as a whole, not 9%.
I intend to retire my diasp.org account on St. David's Day, March 1st. That seems appropriate as a tribute to David and everything that has been shared here.
I dunno, Star Wars day is good too
Thanks, David ❤
Thank you very much for having hosted it all these years.
This was my first account on the fediverse, and I'll recall it fondly for that.
Having issues with data export. Got this email:
<br />Hello John

We’ve encountered an issue while processing your personal data for download. If this issue persists, please contact your podmin for help.

Sorry,

The diaspora* email robot!

Not surprising. There are outstanding bugs.

I've revised my intent for my Last Login Day on diasp.org from St. David's Day to Groundhog Day.

Those of you who've got Bluesky accounts, but still want to keep in contact with the Fediverse: Consider using the "Bridgy Fed"
how-to: https://fed.brid.gy/docs

Thanks, buddy. I'm still figuring out the move. I was thinking of hopping over to Friendica and resetting things up there, because it seems most connected... does anyone have any tips?
Thanks phle 😀

In the spirit of 'keeping it simple', I'd mention that it's super easy and quick to "just join another pod", cut and paste your description if desired, and use this time to (re) add existing/long-time contacts from the new pod, maybe also 'signal flare' to usual hangouts, and (remember?) look for the "new here" post.

I'd say 75% or more of my (smallish) diaspora* regulars are already migrated to d.social or glasswings or whatever... No muss, no fuss really, though we can always try/add new platforms and connecting apps/sites. But just to avoid the annoyance of making a whole new move (like after Google + and some pods 'here') it's really easy, and there's still time (thanks for the long lead, @David)

I too think Bluesky is great, and is what it is - short form and with some big, mostly one-way celebs and organizations, but also easy to use and to connect with real people with similar interests. But it's not replacing this comfy living room (pora*), only another channel. Guess I'm old school (but also a social scientist!) Choices!
