No #DeviantArt... not you 😭

#webcomic #MastoArt #krita
A colored humoristic digital strip comic, in four panels.
1. A little blue cartoony bird aim his foot with a big gun, the gun writes "Massive Layoffs" on it. He looks like he carefully want to get the right aim, very in focus.
2. The panel is only an onomatopeia writing "BANG!"
3. The little blue bird looks proud of himself, holding his tiny leg and jumping around in pain because of his foot. He says "Oh Dear! This week I really am the best at shooting myself in the foot!
4. Last panel, the mascot of DeviantArt enter the panel with a large glass of beer in one hand and a larger gun in another hand, it's written: "Our AI-Generated ART Tool" on it. The character feels super confident and say to the blue bird that didn't expect this: "Hold my beer...".

I love your 4koma type formats :)
@raghukamath
Hasn't this always been the original comics format, i.e. "comic strip"?
Very old comic strip featuring Mickey Mouse
@post@raghukamath We can go deeper πŸ˜‰ https://i.pinimg.com/originals/79/9a/63/799a6304973a89e6abde61be58369353.jpg

Thanks Raghukamath :blobcatheart: It's part of my testing/experimentation. Try comic with a low time/production/panel budget, this way I'll probably learn to make smaller Pepper&Carrot episodes, because I was expanding them so much on the last year they became unmanageable to produce. I'll write more about this on a blog next week. I'm learning how to find 6 pages " a comfortable device to storytell complex things". ☺️
For those (like me) who are out of the loop: https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2022/11/deviantart-upsets-artists-with-its-new-ai-art-generator-dreamup/.

TL;DR: DeviantArt created an art generator called DreamUp based on Stable Diffusion, and art uploaded by the site’s users will be used for training unless they opt out.
An ActivityPub-federated alternative to DeviantArt/ArtStation would be nice especially if it will let you manage and update assets/sources attached to artworks.
@post I wonder if a https://pixelfed.org/ large instance might do the trick (for the 'portfolio' view).
@Post
It's great that the Fediverse features different implementations that resemble mainstream social networks (Mastodon/Twitter and PixelFed/Instagram) and this is why I would iterate for DeviantArt/ArtStation too (PixelFed looks too much like Instagram for this purpose)
ahah πŸ˜‚πŸ˜ laughing and crying, what a week
What? Oh no. 😱😭
Deviantart: Is this the line for getting into trouble for massive IP and creator rights issues?

Github: Yes, it is.
@eldelacajita Except that artists may have granted DeviantArt the right to do that in the submission guidelines which are part of the terms of service: https://www.deviantart.com/about/policy/submission/ @davidrevoy
Isn’t ArtStation supposed to be the thing, now, anyway? :P
@Poulpette Yes, they are dominant on this market right now. But they have been bought by Epic Game, and I guess because Epic now co-own the right on all uploads/artworks on the platform, they'll try soon to use these data for something similar. I was sure this type of IA move would comes from Binance (Adobe) or Artstation (Epic Game) first, from deviantArt it's a bit unexpected.
Binance is a crypto exchange, did you mean Behance?
@michcia

OOpsie. Right! You see my brain starts to fusion all the concept "that doesn't spark joy" in a same basket πŸ˜…

Thanks for the correction and your feedback!

@Poulpette

these are sad times for artists indeed.. Your nice comic strip is perfectly on point
That's the cutest comic bird since Tweety. Awesome style as always.
I mentioned this topic to my friend and they did some digging and it looks like it was a huge misunderstanding on Deviantart's side? Apparently people who manage their official Twitter fucked up the announcement.

Here is a link to the latest reblogs: https://at.tumblr.com/thefloatingstone/velvety-vixen-i-actually-specifically-brought/zv5wwpejs4zz

There is more to it tho: https://at.tumblr.com/drawingden/your-post-about-deviantarts-ai-related-changes-is/6pirtajjeaz2

There even is a form to fill if you want to opt out: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScBl3RIkgoVJh89rWOSd-bz_FdlCZGSUho4ADhG2rmCq3dVPg/viewform
@the_luck_witch Oh yes, I agree (read this thread https://mastodon.art/@reinderdijkhuis/109327285432913484 for more) and they backpedaled a lot since the original announcement. (src. https://www.deviantart.com/team/journal/UPDATE-All-Deviations-Are-Opted-Out-of-AI-Datasets-934500371 ) but still, what a communication mess at the scale of a community. A big bullet in their own foot could have been avoided with more communication and a better default option right of the box.

Also, all my artworks from DeviantArt are easy to find on https://haveibeentrained.com/ , so I guess the evil is already done...πŸ˜”
Yep, they definitely did perform a massive foot shooting. My friends mutual worded it as: "No matter how logical and well-intentioned the product was, no one could listen under the immediate fight-or-flight response this announcement created".

I don't have very impressive art on the site, but damn did I not go to specifically opt out all that I felt I don't want used for such a thing.
@the_luck_witch
You could try a GDPR data deletion request. If enough people do that someone might sue them for their model. This site might help

https://yourdigitalrights.org/

@aral used it to demand deletion of his Twitter data:

I wish there was an #ActivityPub project with features and UI similar to the likes of #DeviantArt. #Pixelfed is not it, #MediaGoblin is long dormant and way behind. There's nothing but if music has #Funkwhale, there's definitely a place to be made for art!
This is so accurate it hurts. Great work David! 😁
I miss Deviant Art from back in the day. It was so cool.
still amazes me that DeviantArt is still around
I may have missed something but... can't I DELETE my account on #DeviantArt? Only deactivate it?
screenshot of my DevianArt account. I only see one entry for "deactivation" of the account, not "deleting the account"
@Petit_Lutin Ha, I never went to this section. Not sure what their ToS says about that. In any case, the word is really badly chosen, it really feels like a simple 'offline' deactivation. Bad.
@lemonheep Oh yes, true. I started to use Twitdesk because of that, but the image preview was smaller (they fixed it recently) and the prominent display of the like/reshare 'score' felt always wrong to me. Like if this amount tried to 'nudge' my appreciation of an artwork. I'm so happy the count here is not that prominent.
