Meta: 3-4% of users’ feeds is #news.

Pew: 31% of American adults say they regularly get news from Facebook.

So either #Meta and Americans define news differently, the small amount of news shared on #Facebook has an outsized impact, or likely, a bit of both.

That said, during the last two multi-hour Facebook outages, direct and total visitors to our legacy local news sites went up.

It’s more evidence that communities will seek out impactful content.

Give Up #GitHub: The Time Has Come!

Specifically, we at Software Freedom Conservancy have been actively communicating with #Microsoft and their GitHub subsidiary about our concerns with “Copilot” since they first launched it almost exactly a year ago. Our initial video chat call (in July 2021) with Microsoft and GitHub representatives resulted in several questions which they said they could not answer at that time, but would “answer soon”. After six months of no response, Bradley published his essay, If Software is My #Copilot, Who Programmed My Software? — which raised these questions publicly. Still, GitHub did not answer our #questions.

Content warning: Increase in hate speech on bird site

For all the talk of Mastodon being better about harassment it doesn’t seem like it has any features ppl who deal w/ tons of harassment have been asking Twitter for:
* Mass blocking capabilities
* Ability to block/limit anyone who likes a specific post or follows a specific person
* Ability to see only notifications from mutuals, etc.

Can you even limit ur replies to mutuals only on here? Doesn’t seem like you can?

Hi everyone! My name is Rocky.

I'm a Chicago boy who loves local sports here. Cubs, WhiteSox, Bears, Bulls and Blackhawks.

I have a podcast with a few friends -- #bumsofmanarchy

Over time, I'm weaning myself away from the bird app, and onto #Mastodon. Glad to be here!

As with many of these experiments, it could be a long time before this performance has a meaningful impact. While the four-core #fiber would work with existing networks, the system could easily be very expensive. It's more likely to see initial use with internet backbones and other major networking projects where capacity matters more than cost.

How Hackers Used #Slack to Break into #EA #Games

A representative for the hackers told Motherboard in an online chat that the process started by purchasing stolen cookies being sold online for $10 and using those to gain access to a Slack channel used by EA.
...
The hackers then requested a multifactor #authentication token from EA IT support to gain access to EA's corporate #network. The representative said this was successful two times.

Once inside EA's network, the hackers found a service for EA developers for compiling games. They successfully logged in and created a virtual machine giving them more visibility into the network, and then accessed one more service and downloaded #game #source #code.
