In the Donald J. Hall Sculpture Park at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Missouri, giant badminton birdies sit in the grass. The work, called Shuttlecocks, was created by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen. It looks like a huge game stopped mid-rally and nobody came back to clean it up. The museum lists each shuttlecock as nearly 18 feet tall, about 16 feet across, and 5,500 pounds.💡 Nerd Fact: Oldenburg and van Bruggen’s idea was architectural, not just oversized. The Nelson-Atkins says they imagined the museum building as the badminton net and the lawn as the playing field, then placed four shuttlecocks as if a rally had frozen on both sides of the “net.”

It was installed near Meadow Lake at The Morton Arboretum in Lisle, Illinois.💡 Nerd Fact: Hallow belonged to Popper’s Human+Nature exhibition, which the Morton Arboretum described as his first major U.S. exhibition and largest anywhere at the time. The painted shelves cover the building like a library wall. On Kobra’s project page for Colégio Ser, the artist says he asked people to suggest Brazilian books before painting it. About 4,000 suggestions came in, and the 150 most suggested titles appear on the mural. The child on the ladder keeps the list from feeling abstract. It becomes a reading list you can climb.
💡 Nerd Fact: Kobra tied this wall to Brazil’s reading habits. On his Colégio Ser page, he quotes the Retratos da Leitura survey, saying Brazil had lost 4.6 million readers in four years and that only 52% of the population had the habit of reading.

From Russia with Love – JanIsDeMan in Solnechnodolsk, Russia
JanIsDeMan turns a flat façade into a three-story bookcase, with Russian-language titles, a small cathedral, and a Matryoshka doll tucked between the shelves. On the artist’s project page, he notes that the books were selected together with local residents and that the 2021 mural was made in collaboration with UMG / Urban Morphogenesis Festival and Emdee. The building stops looking blank; it starts to look like a shelf the neighborhood helped fill.

On the outer wall of Schulhaus Lachen, a glowing book opens, letters scatter, and a huge bird carries a child into the air. Porta Cultura Graubünden documents I HAVE A DREAM as a 2015 work by Fabian “BANE” Florin at the elementary school, close to the neighborhood where he grew up. The idea is simple and easy to read from a distance: a story can lift you away from the concrete for a moment.

This book does not sit still. A bright lightbulb rises from the pages, with flying sheets and white splashes around it. TAKERONE’s portfolio lists the work as Enlighten, a freehand spray-paint mural about 5 by 12 meters, painted on the side of a school in Razgrad in November 2023. Escape Through a Book – HERA in Vincennes, France
HERA’s fox curls around the reading child, close enough to feel protective. Le Monde à l’envers – Zabou in Moûtiers, France
Zabou lets the building do part of the work. On her own page for the Eternelles Crapules festival, she explains that Le Monde à l’envers uses the triangular roof of Moûtiers’ book and media library as the cover of the book. The upside-down surface becomes grass and dandelions; the reader stays still, but the world tilts.

This is exactly what the French street artist, Le CyKlop, accomplishes with his witty, transformative art.
Hailing from the vivacious city of Paris, Le CyKlop’s affinity for street art was ignited during the flourishing graffiti culture of the 1980s. However, his fascination was not confined to the freedom and spontaneity of street art; he was captivated by the potential to transfigure the ordinary world into an extraordinary canvas.
“I try to break free from conventional supports such as walls or canvas, to invest in objects. By putting an eye on them, I try to bring them to life, give them a soul and give birth to a form of fantasy,” Le CyKlop explains. He further adds, “A playful and anthropomorphic art that borrows its artistic language from toys, comics or animal bestiary. By drawing on the history of the Cyclops, I revisiting Greek mythology.”

These mundane posts, with a splash of paint and a sprinkle of imagination, transform into one-eyed creatures. Suddenly, these functional items, often overlooked, develop a life of their own, morphing into Cyclopean characters overseeing the city streets.

Some bollards wear a simplistic, single eye, while others are adorned with faces, topped with an array of hats, or other playful accessories. Yet they all share a common trait – a single, unblinking eye witnessing the world.

Since 2006, OAKOAK has had streets, walls, sidewalks and roads as its playground. Originally from Saint Etienne, he sticks his drawings in each of the places he crosses in order to create a smile in the pedestrian at the bend of a street where he does not expect it.
His approach consists of diverting urban elements, playing with flaws that at first glance seem of no particular interest, such as cracks in a wall. He thus adds his own vision, his own references which often relate to the geek universe. A way of imagining the urban space in a more poetic way.From playful interactions with crosswalks to whimsical depictions of beloved cartoon characters like Homer Simpson and Obelix, Oakoak’s work brings a fresh perspective to the streets.

This sparked a passion for graffiti that led him to paint illegally on street walls and railway lines in and around Lisbon.
Odeith’s impressive evolution as an artist is due in part to his dedication to painting large-scale murals in various neighborhoods throughout Damaia, Carcavelos, and Amadora. Although he dropped out of school at the age of 15 and never received any formal art training, Odeith’s talent for drawing and his relentless self-taught approach to his craft led him to become the renowned artist he is today.
In 2003, Odeith adopted his current moniker, and by 2005, his innovative use of the anamorphosis technique began garnering international recognition. This “Somber 3D” style, as he later called it, involves painting on 90-degree corners or flat walls to create authentic, large-scale compositions of insects or objects that give a striking 3D optical illusion effect. Many of these works, painted in abandoned spaces, quickly went viral due to their realism and technique.
Odeith briefly lived in London after closing his tattoo shop in 2008, but he has since returned to Lisbon, where he now focuses exclusively on studio work and walls.
